National Healthy School Award: West Hatch has been presented with a National Healthy School Award. Catering Manager Mrs Lea Smith (pictured right) and PSEC Co-ordinator Ms Louise Hiscott received the award at a ceremony in Chelmsford. Head Teacher Frances Howarth said: "I am pleased for, and proud of, everyone who has worked towards us gaining this award. I feel the phrase 'Healthy School' encapsulates all that we stand for at West Hatch - reflecting the wider ethos of a place that provides a safe and secure environment for youngsters, helping them to develop models of healthy living for later in life."

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge

Social Media and the changing face of football will be highlighted by two students in the area final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Year 10 students Jake Groce and Joseph Mulvihill-Young were chosen from six finalists to represent the school in the annual competition.

Gresham College Public Speaking: Year 10 student Joe Mulvihill-Young was Highly Commended for his delivery of 'The Beautiful Ugly Game' at the Gresham College Worshipful Company of Educators Public Speaking Competition. Joe impressed judges with his passion while a speech entitled 'Not so social media', delivered by fellow Year 10 student Jake Groce, was received with cheers as he challenged the audience to think about priorities in their social media use.

First Give Project: Year 8 students gave presentations on their chosen causes in the final of the school’s First Give competition. Nine teams spoke on their favoured charities before an audience and judges who awarded the St Clare Hospice team - Macie Thorne, Abigail Holmes-Bright, Taila Black, Rebecca Wallis and Maddie Fitch - the £1,000 first prize.

Camps International Bike Ride: Five staff are preparing for a 300-mile sponsored cycle ride to raise money for a Camps International school trip to Borneo next year.

Kwame is flying high: Kwame Yeboah is an outstanding sportsman (England basketball), a superb pianist (having recently gained Grade 8) and organist - and now pilot. Kwame is pictured with his instructor after completing his first solo flight.

Youth Council Cup: Ex-student Malachi Fontenelle, who is now studying engineering at Southend College, is one of four Epping Forest Youth Council members to receive this year's Youth Council Cup presented annually in recognition of their commitment to the youth council. Malachi is a keen scout and contributes to community events such as local town shows. He volunteers with the City of London and with the special needs adventure playground charity ELHAP.

Readathon: Students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, are taking part in a sponsored Readathon to raise money for various charities. The fundraising challenge, launched on World Book Day, was offered to all Year 7 and 8 students. Each participating pupil is sponsored for each book they read with the money raised going to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, Together for Short Lives and CLIC Sargent charity for children with cancer.

Royal Albert Hall performance: West Hatch students performed at the Royal Albert Hall at the invitation of the Redbridge Music Festival. Head Teacher Frances Howarth said: "We are very proud of the students."
Ski trip: The 2016 ski trip was the fifth and last organised by Ray Flowers. Having been to the USA for the past four years, Alagna in Italy was his chosen destination for 2016. There was record interest with more than 200 parents and students attending the initial meeting last March and 79 students and nine members of staff making the final journey.
The party, travelling in two groups, set off via Germany, arriving at the Mritillo Rosso hotel in Alagna.

Rugby selection: Congratulations to Year 8 students Brandon Smith (pictured below) and Dylan West who have been chosen for Essex Rugby/DPP for Saracens. The DPP is the Development Player Programme for Saracens who are working within Essex Rugby.
Velodrome: Sixteen staff experienced the Velodrome at the Olympic Park, Stratford. Head of House Steve Windsor said: "Well done to Mr Rob Tester (pictured below, right) who won the 'Flying Lap' again, although at a slightly slower time than last year!"
