Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
A group of Year 10 students at The Boswells School travelled to Alexandra Palace in London for The Princess Diana Anti-Bullying national annual event.

The students attended workshops and focus groups where they participated and listened to expert guest speakers, learned what it takes to be an effective ambassador and were educated as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.

The day began with a question and answer session with eight panel members including Cel Spellman (recently on ITV’s Cold Feet) and the CEOs of some major internet companies.

The boys then attended a YouTube workshop while the girls took part in a “My true selfie” workshop.

The boys teamed up with other anti-bullying ambassadors and YouTube star Joe Tasker to create a video.

Their aim was to raise awareness for bullying and to share advice and experiences on the topic.

The girls took a selfie which was surrounded by words which showed support for people being bullied and how to raise self-esteem, it was titled with the hashtag 'My true selfie'.

After lunch, the students took part in acting and dancing workshops. They rehearsed a routine with a professional dancer to be performed later that day.

A second group formed an acting workshop with ex-Eastenders star Arthur Norwood (better known in the series as 'Fat Boy') who guided them in producing an anti-bullying play that
would also be performed later in the day.

To finish of the day everyone showcased their work.

The school thanks Mr Page and Miss Smith for organising the trip.

Head of Year and Anti-Bullying co-ordinator, Darren Page said: "The students were a credit to the school, taking them to such a big event really enthuses them about what they can do to help our community.

"For them to meet in person Alex Holmes, who was the founder of the programme was an added bonus."

He added: "These new Ambassadors will join the ranks of our ABA’s in school, the team has been growing steadily for several years now thanks to the opportunity to take students to these national training events.

"We are very fortunate to have so many caring members of our student body to help support in our community."

Anti-bullying assemblies have since been delivered at school by members of the school’s Leadership Team, focusing on this year’s theme of using ‘power for good’.

This related to how young people use online media and the impact it can have on their lives and emotional wellbeing whilst the topic was also discussed and delivered during the week’s PSHCE lessons across the school.

For non-uniform day pupils were encouraged to wear blue, to show support for the national Anti-Bullying message with their donations supporting the Children in Need charity.

The students also worked with Denis Stretton, from HiPoint Visual Limited, on an aerial photograph. Denis has been working closely with students on drone racing projects and helped produce a message of support for Anti-Bullying week using one of the drones.

He said: "It's the least I could do, you and your team are very supportive of our work, so if I can help in any way please don't hesitate to ask.

"All the students were very friendly, and it was good for those that attend the Monday Drone Club to see how the technology is put to use at first hand."

Mr Page said: "Getting the students involved at break time to help spread the Anti-Bullying message was hectic but fun, again I feel it reflects the supportive spirit we have in our community."
