 Love Unites Us
By Maira Kalman on Nov 05, 2014 08:30 am

Sampler is divided into compartments with vases, birds, and flowers. Those compartments with text are composed in the form of a rebus or pictogram. Sampler is edged with tatting. Contains the following text in Spanish

a sampler might say

“noli timere”

be not afraid.

but this sampler says

“love unites us”

in the end, we are all alone.

but somewhere we also learn the elusive truth that there is love.

love of life and beauty, knowledge and kindness.

love unites us

is not a bad thing to read on a sampler tenderly made by a twelve year old girl.

Maira Kalman is an illustrator, artist, author and designer. She is the author of My Favorite Things, the catalogue to her Cooper Hewitt exhibition, and Ah-Ha to Zig-Zag, a unique ABC book that celebrates thirty-one objects from the museum’s collection. You can purchase both of these books, as well as the Ah-Ha to Zig-Zag puzzle at shop.cooperhewitt.org

This sampler will be on view beginning December 12th in Maira Kalman Selects, an exhibition in the former Drawing Room of the Carnegie Mansion.
