EVENT | Digital Global Governance: What Role for Switzerland?
April 29|In partnership with the University of Geneva|swissnex China

The growing importance of the Internet and of digital technologies touches upon a number of challenging policy areas and provokes a debate about the need to create global standards in certain complex digital areas (e.g. data protection, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, etc.). Prof. Jacques de Werra, Vice-Rector of the University of Geneva, will discuss the global digital policy ecosystem and Switzerland’s established role as a hub for global multilateral discussions and norm-setting activities.  Learn more and register ➠

SEMINAR|Towards a "New Innovation"- For a more Sustainable Society

In this seminar, Professor Claudio R. Boër will explain the idea that innovation is a cycle, and discuss the evolution of innovation regarding the manufacturing sector. EXHIBITION|VR_I: A contemporary dance piece in Immersive Virtual Reality
May 9-12 / 15-18|Chronus Art Center (CAC), Shanghai

VR_I is a contemporary dance piece in immersive virtual reality created by Gilles Jobin and Artanim.  Equipped with virtual reality headsets, five visitors at a time will be able to freely navigate a real world inhabited by virtual dancers. Developed in association with Artanim, VR_I was presented at Sundance Film Festival 2018 & La Biennale di Venezia 2018, receiving the Innovation Award and the People’s Choice award at the Festival du nouveau cinema in Montréal 2017.  Learn more ➠

As the official representative of Swiss Public Universities in China, we will be holding the annual SWISS ALUMNI CHINA Soirée on May 24, 2019. Once again, the gathering will be a great opportunity for the Alumni community from 25 Swiss universities to stay connected, exchange ideas and be informed of the latest news from swissnex. This year, about 200 alumni from our network are expected to join and have an opportunity to reconnect over finger food and drinks.

On March 8, Dr. Felix Moesner, Science Consul and CEO of swissnex China, represented Empa at Design Shanghai as a guest speaker to share the latest Swiss development and achievements in science, technology, ecology and materials with the audience at the New Material Workshops. Throughout the 4-day exhibition from 6-9 March, new materials created with leading-edge Swiss technologies were prominently featured as part of Material Trends on “Future Craft,” “Residual Impact,” and “Bio-Digitalization”.  Learn more  ➠

RECAP|MAS ETH MTEC Delegation Explores China Business Landscape

On March 11, we had the pleasure of receiving 33 ETH Zurich MAS MTEC students at swissnex China. Dr. Felix Moesner welcomed the participants and introduced the higher education, research and innovation landscape in China. During the study trip, the delegation visited companies such as Bühler, Ctrip and Roche. They returned to swissnex China on March 15 for their group workshop session and attended a networking reception at the Swiss Residence hosted by Mr Olivier Zehnder, Swiss Consul General in Shanghai. RECAP|Francophonie - A Call to Gather!
Café des Sciences Special Edition
March 21 | swissnex China

To celebrate the Francophonie month of March, a special edition of the Café des Sciences was co-organized with other French speaking countries and regions on March 21. 5 Scientists and startups from Belgium, Canada/Québec, France, Luxembourg and Switzerland were invited to present their research and pitch their projects on creative design, sustainable energy, botanical science and various other topics. An audience of more than 70 French speakers gathered together to attend the lectures, pitches and networking session.  Learn more  ➠

WELCOME!  Mirjam Haab
New Junior Project Manager - Science Outreach & Diplomacy

Mirjam is a Swiss citizen born in Zurich in 1993. In 2017, she attained her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Zurich, then went on to pursue a Master’s in Banking & Finance. Two exchange semesters brought her to the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia and to Fudan University in Shanghai. After concluding her exchange program in China, she decided to apply for an internship with swissnex China. Her main interests revolve around microfinance and inequality topics. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, cultural activities and doing sports outside - if the weather permits.

WELCOME!  Luca Mondada
New Junior Manager - Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Luca was born in 1997 in Lausanne and has lived on both sides of the Röstigraben. He speaks (most of) the Swiss national languages fluently (Rumantsch is still missing! – he’s on it). He studied Computer Science and Physics at ETH Zürich and gained experience engaging with startups while working on digitalization challenges in finance. He joined swissnex in Shanghai to obtain a better understanding of the Chinese innovation landscape, and help swiss startups appreciate their value and opportunities. He is a proficient musician but as priorities changed he has opted to appreciate other people’s performances instead.

  • COMMUNITY | Dr. Felix Moesner, CEO of swissnex China, has been re-elected for a second term for the Shanghai Board of SwissCham China. swissnex China continues to make impactful contributions to the Swiss community in Shanghai with events highlighting the latest trends in innovation, and is delighted to collaborate with SwissCham with the Fireside Chat event series as well as the Digitalization Committee.
  • SNX NETWORK  On March 18 we were delighted to welcome our colleague Samuel Cobbi, Science Officer at the Science and Technology Office of the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore to our Shanghai office. It was a wonderful opportunity for our teams to exchange ideas and share best practices.
  • PATENTS  Once again Switzerland claims the top spot for total patent filings per capita at the European Patent Office, submitting a total of 7,927 applications in 2018, a 7.8% increase from 2017 and more than double that of the runner-up, the Netherlands. Learn more  ➠
  • FUTURE SKILLS  Switzerland Climbs to #2 Worldwide in The Economist's Worldwide Educating for the Future Index (WEFFI), following close behind Finland, improving upon its #4 placement in the previous year.   • UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL  Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) has been placed among World's Top 10 Best Hospitals by Newsweek, ranking at 9th. PARTNER EVENT|Swiss Education Fair 2019
Swiss Business Hub China|April 13 & 14|Swissôtel Grand Shanghai & Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu

swissnex China will participate in Swiss Education Fair 2019 to represent all Swiss public universities, distributing the latest brochures and leaflet about the available courses and training programs. Alumni who are currently doing internships at swissnex China will share their experience in Switzerland with prospective students. The Swiss Education Fair is organized by the Swiss Business Hub China and supported by the Consulates General of Switzerland in Shanghai and in Chengdu.

SURVEY|Robot Acceptance & Cultural Management

The survey from the University of Zurich (UZH) seeks to identify relevant factors of robot acceptance and to examine how national cultural differences affect the level of acceptance. Therefore, the study compares the acceptance of different national cultures towards the use of robots. The results would contribute to explain different acceptance levels in the use of robots, considering different cultures, and thus to develop more understanding regarding the acceptance process.
