As the official representative of Swiss Public Universities in China, swissnex China will be organizing the Einstein Day at Fudan University on September 17. CAFE DES SCIENCES  |  The Invisible Growth of Food Tech
September 19|swissnex China offices, Shanghai

For the 8th Café des Sciences, we have invited Fabian Graf, Co-founder and CEO of the food technology startup Faitron. Mr Graf will not only go over his inspirations and entrepreneur experience but also elaborate on the interwoven state of technology and food production. What has changed about what goes on our tables since 2000? What technology is considered to be a key game changer for food preservation? What will become the trend for food consumption in the near future? These ambitious questions are what Mr Graf attempts to find answers for.  Learn more and register ➠

LECTURE & WORKSHOP|Christophe Guberan
September|Neuni, Shanghai

Supported by swissnex China and Pro Helvetia, Christophe Guberan, a product designer based in Switzerland, will come to Shanghai and attend a two-week residency program at Neuni from 8 September to 17 September. The research trip will help Mr Guberan learn more about manufacturing industries, specifically in metal production and 3D printing technology. With the help from Neuni, we are planning a public lecture as well as another potential workshop with Mr Guberan in September.  Learn more and stay tuned for further information on the lecture & workshop ➠

EVENT|China Club - China: The Future of Finance
Organized by Swiss Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SSCC)|September 10|Geneva

Our CEO Dr. Felix Moesner will be joining a panel of distinguished speakers including Mr. Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum and H.E Ambassador CHEN Xu, Ambassador of the P.R.C to the UN at this event in Geneva, to discuss the future of finance in China, as well as its implications for Switzerland. The China Club is a high-level private event organized by the Swiss Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Geneva Chapter.  Learn more ➠

EXHIBITION|Open Codes. Connected Bots
July 20 - October 7, 2019 | Chronus Art Center (CAC), Shanghai

Supported by swissnex China, Pro Helvetia Shanghai and Vitra, the exhibition - Open Codes. Connected Bots is a new form of assembly, where knowledge production on making and understanding computer code and artistic approaches takes place at a single venue, which will transform CAC into a multifunctional new media and the art of coding laboratory. Co-presented by Chronus Art Center (CAC) and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe while the public program consisting of talks and workshops is collaborated with House of Electronic Arts (HeK) in Switzerland. Learn more ➠

EXHIBITION|The Kind Stranger
August 23 - October 20|UNArt Center, Shanghai

Titled as “The Kind Stranger”, the exhibition aims to reflect and to some degree respond to the new conditions and scenarios of contemporary human society driven by the accelerating technological revolution. Over 30 international artists are exhibited in the show, among which the researcher – Rena Giesecke from ETH Zurich will also present her work - Wax drawing machine. Public talks and workshops will be arranged during the exhibition. Supported by swissnex China and Pro Helvetia Shanghai.

RECAP|Congratulations to Deep Cube for claiming 2nd Place in WAIC 2019 DeepBlue Cup AI Competition
August 31| World Artificial Intelligence Conference

Supported by swissnex China, Deep Cube, a leading AI healthcare technologies startup for Dermato-Oncology and skin beauty, participated in the DeepBlue Cup International A.I. Science and Innovation Competition during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2019. Matt Morawski, BDO and Co-Founder of Deep Cube, represented the Swiss AI startup at the competition, and eventually won the second place out of 40 startups at the main event and out of 600 startups that applied to the competition. Learn More  ➠

RECAP|Café des Sciences: Technical Spirals that We Inspire
August 15| Blockchain Centre Shanghai

In collaboration with Blockchain Centre Shanghai, swissnex China presented its 8th edition of Café des Sciences on the topics of Quarks and design. The main speaker Laura Couto Rosado, a Swiss artist and designer, delved deep into her experience working alongside experimental machines as well as quantum machinists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Through these intimate exposures, Laura drew inspirations and created ways to visualize abstract quantum data — she infused such data with porcelain cups to create a materialization of the unknown.  Learn More  ➠

RECAP|Visit to Archi-Union with ETH Researcher Rena Giesecke
August 22|Archi-Union, Shanghai

ETH Zurich NCCR Digital Fabrication lab recently launched a joint program with Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning. On August 22, Tongji Professor Philip Yuan, founder of Archi-Union, gave a tour for ETH Zurich researcher Rena Giesecke, who just arrived in Shanghai for the “The Kind Stranger” UNArt exhibition. During the tour, Professor Yuan showcased various ongoing projects that not only embody pioneering computational design concepts but also utilize cutting-edge digital building technologies.  Learn More  ➠

WELCOME!|Zhijie (Percy) Chen
New Junior Project Manager, Art-Science

Zhijie (Percy) Chen acquired his Philosophy bachelor’s degree at University of California, Berkeley, with a heavy focus on both modal logic and Phenomenology. During school, Zhijie was a project manager at the student organization Berkeley Advertising Agency and a co-captain at the Cal Squash Club. After graduation, he returned to Shanghai and worked at Chronus Art Center, where he further grew his project managing skillsets through assisting in exhibitions as well as taking charge of various workshops. In his free time, Zhijie enjoys reading science fiction. Zhijie is fluent in English and Mandarin.

  • ACADEMIA|EPFL Professor Michael Grätzel ranked #1 out of 100,000 Scientists across all fields|A study conducted by Stanford University places EPFL Professor Michael Grätzel in first place on a list of 100,000 scientists. Prof. Grätzel directs the Laboratory of Photonics and Interfaces and is best known for inventing the dye-sensitized solar cells, so-called “Grätzel cells”, which contributed hugely to the current development of perovskite photovoltaics. Learn more  ➠
  • STARTUPS|Spectroplast AG closes CHF 1.5 million Seed Round|Congratulations to Spectroplast AG! The Silicone Additive Manufacturing Spinoff from ETH Zürich just completed a CHF 1.5 million seed funding round led by the Munich-based investor AM Ventures Holding GmbH. Spectroplast AG was one of the 22 leading Swiss startups that joined our #SwissTech Pavilion at CES Asia 2019, where the company’s innovation in Silicone 3D Printing was honored with the prestigious CES Asia Innovation Award.  Learn more  ➠
