For our 8th Café des Sciences Lecture we invite Swiss artist and designer Laura Couto Rosado for a talk on designing cups with Quarks, introducing how she bridges our everyday life with extraordinary phenomena in her design. Her presentation will be followed by a roundtable discussion with other two guest speakers - Edward Liao (Lecturer at Shanghai Institute of Design, China Academy of Art / Head of Design Subjects, AIVA) and Sarah Shen (Product Manager, 3Design Software). EXHIBITION|Open Codes. Connected Bots
July 20 - October 7, 2019 | Chronus Art Center (CAC), Shanghai

Supported by swissnex China, Pro Helvetia Shanghai and Vitra, the exhibition - Open Codes. Connected Bots is a new form of assembly, where knowledge production on making and understanding computer code and artistic approaches takes place at a single venue, which will transform CAC into a multifunctional new media and the art of coding laboratory. Co-presented by Chronus Art Center (CAC) and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe while the public program consisting of talks and workshops is collaborated with House of Electronic Arts (HeK) in Switzerland. Learn more ➠

EXHIBITION|The Kind Stranger
August 23 - October 20|UNArt Center, Shanghai

Titled as “The Kind Stranger”, the exhibition aims to reflect and to some degree respond to the new conditions and scenarios of contemporary human society driven by the accelerating technological revolution. Over 30 international artists are exhibited in the show, among which the researcher – Rena Giesecke from ETH Zurich will also present her work - Wax drawing machine. Public talks and workshops will be arranged during the exhibition. Supported by swissnex China and Pro Helvetia Shanghai.

On July 12, swissnex China had the pleasure to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) with Nathalie Fontana (Director of Philanthropy at EPFL), He Xiang (representing Chapter Head Ren Zhanbing) and 28 other EPFL alumni and friends at its office in Shanghai. EPFL is the most cosmopolitan technical university in Europe and welcomes students, professors and staff from more than 120 nations. On July 15, swissnex China joined its S&T peers from the Danish Consulate for discussions and exchanges at the annual EMBA seminar on Fintech and Blockchain-related topics at the Academy of Internet Finance of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. RECAP|Bring the Past Time Back or Live in the Future? Re-Thinking Architecture

On July 18, swissnex China was honored to organize an event with two ETH Zürich Alumni: Dr. Yifan Wang and Prof. Hao Hua from Southeast University, who gave insights into two interdisciplinary research fields of architectural studies. Dr. Wang shared with the audience her research project about the genius Zayton (Quanzhou) with the architectural anthropological critiques. Prof. Hua looked at how computational design and digital fabrication rationalize the architectural design as well as cultivate new imaginations.  Learn More  ➠

In July we had the pleasure of welcoming 9 EMBA students from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Italian Switzerland (SUPSI) EMBA programme, 15 students from the HEID-VD Sino-Swiss Summer University in Business Administration, 19 Bachelor students from the Confucius Institute of the University of Basel, as well as a large delegation of 41 students from the MSE China Module SUPSI-ZHAW, who were on study trips to China to learn about the booming innovation ecosystem and local culture. Learn more ➠

WELCOME!|Nicola Thomas Hofer
New Junior Project Manager, Academic Relations

Nicola is a Swiss citizen born in 1988. He first came to China in 2013 as part of a summer program organized by the University of Bern. As part of his (legal) education, he lived in the USA, France, Germany and China. He holds a PhD in Public International Law. His mother tongue is German, and he speaks English and French. He also followed a Chinese language program for one semester at the Peking University School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen. In his free time he likes to travel and to go on hikes.

SABBATICALS|In August we look forward to welcoming sabbatical visits from Alig Bernadette and Katharina Fierz from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).

  • RANKINGS |Switzerland Remains Uncontested World Innovation Leader for 9th Consecutive Year |For the ninth year in a row, Switzerland dominates the Global Innovation Index rankings, a report examining the competitiveness of 129 countries on the basis of 80 detailed metrics, jointly produced by the World Intellectual Property Organization, INSEAD and Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. Switzerland has been consistently topping the index since 2011, an extraordinary feat attesting to the strength of the small Alpine nation's innovation ecosystem and the quality of its public higher education institutions. China leads the Upper Middle-Income Countries group and ranks 14th overall (moving up 3 positions from its 2018 ranking). Read the full report  ➠
