Classmate Spotlight

We've come a long way!

As we all recall, women law students were a rarity back in our days at BC Law. Women comprised less than five percent of our class. Today, women make up 46 percent of BC Law's 733 students. Times have indeed changed.

Enjoy these journeys of three women in our class who continued to blaze the trail after law school with much determination and success.

Ruth Budd

"I think I have only appreciated later what pioneers those of us in the Class of 1968 were for women entering the legal profession."

Ruth came to BC law as an "older" student, married, and a mother. To really stand out, she had a child while in law school! She managed all her responsibilities well and went on to build a very successful career in family law. Read Ruth's standout journey.

Hon. Elizabeth O'Neill LaStaiti

"With all the optimism and confidence of youth, I felt that hard work and good performance would see me through law school and the career to follow.”

After college, Betty thought her career path would lead someplace other than public service. Au contraire. Read about Betty's distinguished life on and off the bench.

Lynn Pearle

"Going to BC Law couldn’t have worked out better for me. It gave me a great career and afforded me a wonderful lifestyle.”

Lynn looks back at law school with great fondness and gives much credit to BC Law and the fact she applied and was accepted only a few weeks before the start of our first year! Read Lynn's journey from young law student to an exceptional estate planner.

Remembrance

Robert F. Drinan, S.J.

Many of us were attracted to BC Law because of the robust efforts of its leader, former dean Robert Drinan, S.J. As dean of the Law School from 1956 to 1970, Father Drinan was a fervent proponent of justice and civil rights. During the 1960s, Father Drinan condemned what he called the de facto segregation of Boston public schools and openly challenged Boston College students to become involved in civil rights issues. He travelled throughout the United States to recruit talented undergraduates, diversifying the student base.

Father Drinan was elected to the United Sates Congress in 1970 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1981. Thereafter, he taught law at Georgetown University Law Center. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 87.

Upon Father Drinan's death, Boston College University Historian Thomas O’Connor said "Father Drinan was a vigorous and dynamic force at Boston College," and that "he attracted the kind of scholars and professors to the law school that would eventually make it one of the most significant in the country.”

Read the poignant reflections on Fr. Drinan’s life and his contribution to BC Law by BC Law alumnus Ed Leahy ’71.

Thank you!

This year our law school community  raised $1.73 million for the Law School Fund, exceeding the amount raised last fiscal year!  Thanks to the generosity of the Law School community, this money will provide much needed support for financial aid, public service stipends, faculty research grants, and more.

Let's make FY19 even more successful. You can make a Reunion Class Gift in honor of a classmate, professor, or special person who made a positive impact on you.
