Pumpkins, falling leaves, apple cider...Yes, It's Fall!

Dear Fillmore-supporting Ghouls and Goblins,

The school year has gotten off to a speedy start!  Before you know it, we'll be carving turkey, putting up a tree or spinning a dreidel or lighting kinara candles, and seeing the shortest day of the year pass.  So, let's all take a breath to note what Fillmore has been up to and mark upcoming dates to remember in the calendar.

Fillmore in the 'hood
  • Recently, Fillmore's Principal, Katherine Latterner, and I presented a powerpoint presentation about the structure and functions of the Friends of Fillmore and Fillmore Arts Center at PTA meetings at participating schools, Ross and Hyde-Addison.  Our next presentation is at Hearst's PTA meeting on Nov. 2nd and the Key and Stoddert visits are being set as well.
  • Friends of Fillmore Board members helmed a table at the Glover Park-Burleith Farmers' Market and the 17th Street Festival on Sept. 24th.  We'll be back at the Market 11am-1pm on October 8th (this Saturday) and October 22nd.  We have coloring for the kids, examples of student artwork, and lots of buttons and info.  STOP ON BY and SAY "HI!".
Putting FUN into fundraising
  • GREAT NEWS! We met our Cafritz Foundation match.  So, thanks to everyone who helped us double our money with their donations. (Remember you can quickly and easily make a tax-deductible donation via PayPal on our site.)
  • In-kind donations are stupendous too!  So, check out our Fillmore teachers' Wish List for this school year.  Maybe you already have an item or two they are hoping for or would be interested in purchasing something directly for the teachers?  Here is your opportunity!
  • October 18th is Fillmore Arts Center day at ALL D.C. locations of HomeMade Pizza.  Go in between 3-9pm on Tuesday, Oct. 18th and walk out with dinner and donations for Fillmore -- a large pizza gives us a $5 donation, a salad is a $2 donation, and a dessert is a $1 donation.  Now that sounds like a delicious way to support arts instruction for D.C. students! (NOTE: No delivery; you must go in to pick up the pizza, but you can call your order in beforehand.)  Print a flier and post in your office!
  • Lastly, we have our partnership with Clean Currents.  I have set a goal to get 25 families to sign up for wind power which would generate $625 dollars donated to Fillmore for the purchase of environmentally-friendly art supplies for our kids.  Really, that is just five families at each of the five participating schools to Fillmore-West, so I HOPE this goal will be far surpassed!  We have until Earth Day (April 22nd), 2012 to reach this goal.  SIGN UP TODAY by visiting Clean Currents and remember to refer to Friends of Fillmore (have your Pepco account number handy).
Upcoming Events at Fillmore
  • See what your kids are making at our Fillmore Open Houses! The events will take place 10-11am and 1-2pm, Fri., Oct. 21st and Mon.-Thurs., Oct. 24-27th.  Visitors are welcome at any time during the open house hours.  Check to see when your child comes to Fillmore.
  • Get in on the action yourself at "Be an Artist" Night! Wednesday, November 9th from 6-8:30pm
Thanks to everyone for their energy, support, and enthusiasm for the Fillmore mission and our associated efforts and activities.

Remember, the arts make us smarter,

Kelly
