FIREWORKS! Ermahgerd!
If you've never seen the BHCA Fireworks show, you're truly missing out on a great event. Starting at 9:30PM in Loyola Hill Park, on Loyola Avenue, we have a spectacular fireworks show put on by the BHCA and Yves Quinty of Crazy Goat Coffee. We suggest you arrive early and bring a blanket or lawn chairs. What will you do while you wait for the show to start? How about send your kids to jump in the bouncy castle, get their face painted, or play with one of our many game-playing volunteers! We'll have music going the whole time.

Here are some video samples...

The fireworks show is the BHCA's single largest expense every year and we rely on donations from local businesses and from the public to help put it on. Before and after the show, we will have BHCA members circulating with donation cans collecting to help us pay the show, so if you see one, please donate what you think is appropriate. If you would prefer to donate online, CLICK HERE, or go to www.BHCA.ca and click the PayPal link on the right.

A New Warehouse for Helping With FurnitureOttawa, ON - Did you know that every Wednesday night in Ottawa, gently used furniture is picked up and then brought to families in need? Since 2005, Helping With Furniture (HWF), a volunteer-run charitable organization, has helped more than 950 families, delivering furniture and household goods for free and thus recirculating viable furniture otherwise destined to landfills.

Thanks to the financial support from the Dragon Boat Foundation, HWF inaugurated its new warehouse on June 7th. No more freezing in the rain or snow. Finally heat and lights!

Stay cool at Ottawa pools, splash pads and beaches

Ottawa – Beat the heat this summer at City of Ottawa outdoor swimming pools, wading pools, splash pads and beaches.

Outdoor pools and wading pools
All outdoor pools will be open as of June 14. Wading pools open on either June 20, June 27 or July 2. Hours of operation vary. Each wading pool will also host a free special event during the summer.

Splash pads
Most of Ottawa’s splash pads are open and will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until September 17.

Beaches
Lifeguards will be on duty at Ottawa’s supervised beaches every day beginning Saturday June 21 until August 17 from noon to 7 p.m.

Ottawa Public Health monitors recreational water quality seven days a week at the City of Ottawa’s supervised beaches. If high levels of bacteria are found, a no-swim advisory is issued and tweeted (@ottawahealth). Daily water quality results will be available at ottawa.ca or by calling 613-580-6744, ext. 13219. Site signage and flags at each beach will also indicate whether a no-swim advisory is in effect.

Visitors are reminded to follow water safety rules and practice sun safety. Smoking is prohibited on all City properties including beaches.

Community gathers to share ideas and excitement for 2017 celebrations

Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson joined Councillors Rainer Bloess and Katherine Hobbs, Co-chairs of the Ottawa 2017 Task Force, at City Hall today to host the Ottawa 2017 Ideas Forum. Residents, businesses, and community leaders gathered to propose ideas and to discuss how they could support the celebrations planned for the Sesquicentennial celebrations in just three years’ time.

“Canada’s 150th is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Ottawa to showcase the city’s strengths and support the local economy,” said Mayor Watson. “We expect to see a 20% increase in the number of visitors we host during the year-long sesquicentennial celebrations, which will be great for our tourism industry and our global reputation.”

4 Home Depot Exclusives For Shoppers To Avoid

from: http://consumerist.com/2014/06/10/4-home-depot-exclusives-for-shoppers-to-avoid/

While many of us go to stores like Home Depot for brands of tools, paint, flooring and other products that you could buy at other retailers, the Depot has several labels you won’t find elsewhere. Unfortunately, not all of these exclusive brands are worth the trip to the Despot. Our colleagues at Consumer Reports have put together a Get It or Forget It review[4] of several products — running the gamut from paper towels to lawn mowers to flooring to kitchen counters — that you can buy at Home Depot, and some of the items that made the “losers” list might surprise you.
