Mongol Empire Rode Wave of Mild Climate
New research led by tree-ring scientist Neil Pederson suggests that unusual weather aided the rise of the Mongol Empire in the 1200s. Tree rings show that at the exact time the empire rose, the normally cold, arid steppes of Central Asia saw their mildest, wettest weather in more than 1,000 years.

Maureen Raymo Wins Prestigious Wollaston Medal

Geologist and climate scientist Maureen Raymo has been awarded one of geology’s oldest and most coveted prizes: the British Wollaston Medal. The first woman to win a Wollaston in the prize's 183-year history, Raymo will receive the medal at the Geological Society of London’s annual meeting in June.
