What's on the Easel for Spring?
Dana Feagin Art News - March 2017

Bunnies, of course!

Several people recently asked why I hadn't painted Chelsea, one of my studio bunnies, especially since she's always available as a model. Until recently, Chelsea was always on the move, making it really difficult to get a good photograph as a reference. Last month, I finally captured a great photo and started her portrait - above, right. The painting on the left is of a shelter bunny from a couple years back. Both paintings are close to done, but not quite finished. Chelsea's portrait is finished except for her whiskers.

As I was painting Chelsea, I kept noticing an odd shadow on her eye in the photograph, so I started studying her eyes at different times of day as the lighting changed. Something just looked odd. A visit to the ophthalmlic vet confirmed early but rapidly progressing cataracts, which appear to be hereditary. Now, just a few weeks later, Chelsea is completely blind and looking very different than the alert bunny in my painting. Although cataract surgery is an option, it's risky, and as the vet said, she is adapting pretty well. She can still get around the studio, jump up into her pen, scale the different levels, find her food - and she is healthy.  This painting will be a tribute to Chelsea's youthful days.
Recent Events
Thanks to everyone who joined us at South Stage Cellars for our book launch in spite of the crazy blowing snow, sleet and rain! As with most events, we only got a few pictures before everyone arrived. A second local event is planned for late April in Ashland (below) if you weren't able to make it out to Jacksonville for the launch celebration. Books are also available on my website (SHOP tab) but no longer through my  Etsy shop - they asked me to remove it due to a new manufacturing partner policy. I am still negotiating this issue, but for now, the book has been removed. Books are $25 each with 100% of proceeds benefitting animal charities. Here is a link to more information about our book.

Our Love Rhymes with Everything art show at The Rogue Valley Manor was also great fun - the best time I've had at an artist reception by far!  We met a lot of amazing people, sold more books and four painting/poetry pairs as well. Welcome Patty, who signed up for my newsletter after purchasing Chicken Little below! Sweet Cheeks is going home with Kat's mom, who already has a collection of my bunny prints in her hallway & the bottom two paintings are now part of The Manor's permanent collection. Our book will also be in their library! Since this event was also a Sanctuary One benefit, I am happy to soon be giving them another nice check for these sales!
