Class of 2023 Siebel Scholars
Nominations Now Open!
It is our pleasure to announce the opening of nominations for the Class of 2023 Siebel Scholars. Following the successful inauguration of the Awards in 2010, we are beginning the thirteenth year of this prestigious award program made possible by the generosity of the Siebel Foundation.
Each year, five Siebel Scholars are selected, and each Siebel Scholar will receive directly an award in the amount of $35,000. This award must be in addition to any other financial support received by or committed to the graduate student. The Institute of Engineering in Medicine is working with the Jacobs School of Engineering in administering the nomination, review, and other processes related to these Awards.
Nomination criteria can be found here. Please submit all nominations via the Siebel Scholars website by Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 4pm PDT.

High School Student STEM Summer Internship Opportunity
The IEM OPALS high school internship program aims to provide pre-college students with hands-on experience in STEM by spending 20 hours per week for six weeks at UC San Diego in a research laboratory environment. Each intern will have the opportunity to interact with researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students engaged in research at the interfaces of engineering and medical science, such as engineering for cancer diagnosis and therapy, biophotonics research, and cardiovascular imaging. Interns will learn the scientific background to the research, observe or assist UC San Diego researchers and students in performing experiments, learn to analyze experimental data and present a research talk or poster at the end of the internship.

The Interstellar Initiative: Applications due May 24, 2022 (EDT)
The Interstellar Initiative ― presented jointly by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development and the New York Academy of Sciences ― recognizes the world's most promising Early Career Investigators and connects them with peers to develop international, multi-disciplinary research projects addressing a major research question. The aim is to foster collaboration between disciplines and thereby catalyze unique discoveries.
The 2022-2023 Interstellar Initiative will address challenges in the area of Basic Research to elucidate the complex mechanisms of living organisms for the benefit of all humankind. Research topics may include biological functions at all levels of analysis: for example, studies on genes and individual molecules, intracellular networks, intercellular associations in tissues and organs, and networks underlying the complex functions of entire organisms.
Participation in this two-part workshop is by application only. Applications are invited from Early Career Investigators who have backgrounds in four broad categories: 1) Biomedical Sciences; 2) Life Sciences; 3) Physical/Natural Sciences, and 4) Biotechnology/Analytical technology. The deadline for application submission is May 24, 2022 (EDT).
