NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

New Name for UCSD Bioengineering

The Department of Bioengineering at UC San Diego has received a transformational philanthropic gift of $25M to invest in new instructional infrastructure to benefit undergraduate students and in faculty and graduate student recruitment and research. These funds will create an endowment that will ensure long-term investments in these areas and give the department a new name:
The Shu Chien-Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering

These funds are being gifted by Gene Lay, the founder and CEO of BioLegend (now a subsidiary for Perkin-Elmer), in honor of his mentor Dr. Shu Chien to memorialize their long-term relationship and commitment to student education and research.
