(Bad?) Information Society

Are we not?  In Golflandia, and every other realm?  Bombarded with the sheer amount of information out there?  Besieged by the supposed experts (please: consider the source) and their marketing, biases and agendas.  Blitzed by claims (who's paying whom?) that have neither science, evidence, nor experienced-based backings.

So, how are you to know what's good info, what's bad, what's helpful, necessary & relevant for you (since senders of information have quite likely never seen you play the game, swing a golf club, or done a proper physical screen..), what's truthful - what's real?  Scarier than a Par 3 requiring a 200-yard carry over water (or 85 yards for some of my advanced-in-years students at wondrous Eugene Country Club).

One can only imagine what's on your mind...

Click on the image above for a music video extravaganza circa 1988 from Information Society - then head back this way for some insight from CS derived from the song's lyrics, and those whose information is spot on.

Dream Team

Allow me to insert some pure (candid, altruistic and wholehearted, heaven forbid) energy into your sphere, with coaching & guidance that supports your specific needs - and a "dream team" in my Rolodex.  Click below on the original unbeatable motley crew for specifics on how I can help, from near or far...

I'll put my coat and tie on momentarily and play head coach Chuck Daly, while acknowledging that you are the superstar and hero in this golf story, I'm just the guide.  Something I'm unable to assist you with sufficiently?  No problemo, I've got people around me who can.

Challenged by performing under pressure?  Allow me to refer you to the Michael Jordans of mental toughness and integrity.

In need of some work on your swing fundamentals, technique and game management savvy?  Larry Bird and John Stockton at your service.

Oh, time to upgrade arguably the most important piece of equipment for better performance, your physical body?  Karl Malone and David Robinson a speed dial away.

Fun, creativity and enjoyment lacking in your game?  How about some time with Magic Johnson and Sir Charles Barkley?  You get the point, and I can help. Stop dreaming, start acting.

'Tis part of the quandary with the abundance of information, is it not?

My man Edward R. Murrow hit the nail in the head many moons ago; more true than ever in 2020, what with the awful failings of Social Media and the Internet to enlighten the human consumer.

"I wanna know
What you're thinking
There are some things you can't hide

Indeed, one of the first things I ask a student: what's floating around in that noggin,' the thing that's running the show, after all?  Sucked down into rabbit holes courtesy of well-meaning, yet highly misguided, playing partners?  Trying out long held beliefs about how to swing, think or even play the game?  Convinced that since someone has garnered more 'likes,' follows and fans on blue-lit screens than others, they must be 'right?'

I understand - yet there are some things you can't hide.  Like physics, or legit science-based findings.  Click on the Murrow quote above for some pertinent thoughts from acclaimed biomechanist Sasho Mackenzie in regards to golf swing, and instruction.

Not interested?  Afraid of what you might learn?  No problemo, part II.

Per Mackenzie:

"Listen, there’ll always be science-deniers and the belief that none of what I or other researchers do is necessary. They’re going to be eroded away. There’ll be fewer and fewer of these people once the community realizes that science and technology are simply about learning and understanding better ways to swing a golf club."

But where are they, these brave souls, so desperately needed in our information bloated society? Quietly doing battle largely behind the scenes?  Fighting the good battles without the fanfare or financial rewards?  Mindfully sending the good, useful, and meaningful messages?

"Here I am in silence
It's a game I have to play"

I admire those individuals - and honestly - am more drawn to that energy than the noisy, insecure, "look at me mommy & daddy," types.

Longtime friend, colleague and coach/instructor partner-in-crime Jon Tattersall is of the brilliant, generous and humble ilk.  Jon was with me last week for two days supporting students at ECC.  Click on the image above to learn more about him, his background, and offerings.

Ah... but not all stay behind the scenes, politely behaved and muted.

Golfer and literary hero Hunter S. Thompson was rarely shy about expressing his beliefs re much of anything.  Politics.  Life.  Death.  The game of golf.  One can only imagine (do you use your imagination prior to each and every shot on the links - it's what must be on your mind - pure positive energy, intention and focus - for successful outcomes) how he might challenge the claims of those incessantly spewing masses of information, regardless of soundness & validity.

How 'bout:

"Buy the ticket, take the ride"

Time to question (the basis for all human progress and something you owe to yourself) the self-anointed experts (Hunter S. would).  Put it out there, best be able to back it up with results, not pseudoscience or fancy, smooth talk.  With simple ways for you, the student, to improve, carefully mined & presented from the data, #'s and stats.  With information that is limited in quantity, yet profound in nature, meaning and utility.

Is that asking too much?  I think not... But then again, as Thompson knew, most of you don't really want to get better, do you now?  Pretending, stuck in a land of make believe quick fixes, afraid to commit.

The reason most people play golf is to wear clothes they would not be caught dead in otherwise.

If that's the case (to each his own, alas) click on a hood-squatting Hunter S. with club and ball prepped to find some threads you would not mind being caught dead in (but please, stick around a bit longer, you have work to do, as do I).  From my peeps at Nike Golf, of course.

Nearly every week since late 2014, I’ve poured a tremendous amount of time, energy, and resources into the “CS Newsletter” offerings, which remain free.  While many in my vocation have chosen other mediums to communicate (and hopefully help golfers, and humans, alike), I continue to opt for the written word, blending pieces of music, pertinent videos and articles.  The intention: to authentically guide you - my fellow wanderers of the links and life’s daily sidewalks - on more fruitful paths.

If you find any solace or motivation from my ongoing labor or love, or if on occasion a message has managed to put a smile on your face, a tear in your eye, inspirited you take a step back and reconsider all for a moment - or even peeved you into positive action - please do consider supporting it with a donation.  Should you already donate, I THANK YOU.

Click on a soon-to-be reading and writing CS, just above, to contribute.

Remote and in-person coaching options at Eugene Country Club and Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (periodically, in season).  The development of an optimal practice program for you, your needs, and your schedule.  Ideas and referrals in the equipment domain - those sticks in your bag, and your physical body.  Science and evidenced-based help in achieving higher mental acuity on the course.  A competent, comprehensive and on-going loop for learning, regardless of where you are on the planet.
