“Time” magazine published an article in the Fall of 2009 that started with the statement that the University of Detroit High School was “Detroit's only Catholic college prep school.” The University of Detroit High School is a great school, but I knew they weren’t the only
Catholic college prep school in Detroit. Since we were just in our second year at Detroit Cristo Rey, I assumed the writer did not know about us. I saw this as an opportunity and contacted the author to introduce her to the school. She responded by saying she did know about us, she just wasn’t sure we were really a college prep school.
If I recall correctly, that made me mad.
This week for the sixth year in a row we gathered the entire school to celebrate that our seniors have achieved 100% college acceptance! Once again, it was a very happy occasion. This celebration is a result of the hard work of our students, the dedication of our academic team and our outstanding college counseling team of Ms. Caitlin Martin and Mr. Zack Silverman. While many students are still receiving acceptance letters and have not made their final choices, they have great options. Seniors have received acceptances from Michigan State, Michigan, Detroit Mercy, Xavier, Loyola (IL), Oakland and Holy Cross among many other colleges and universities.
Getting students accepted in to college is the first step in truly being a college prep high school. Based on data we received from the National Student Clearinghouse last month, we know our graduates are enrolling in college above the national average, are persisting in college above the national average and are starting to graduate from college at 3 – 4 times the national average for low income high school graduates. I am not sure if the Time writer still doubts us, but I am very proud of the college prep school we have become!
We had so much fun last year that we're doing it again. From 6-8 p.m. on February 16 we will gather at Cantoro Market in Plymouth for a "strolling" dinner including an antipasto bar, caprese salad and bruschetta bar, fresh pastas and dessert.
Special guest Jane Genster, President of the Cristo Rey Network, will join us. Jane will provide an update on the progress of the network.
Tickets are only $50 and will go fast. Go to this link to secure your place now

Our women’s and men’s basketball teams are battling in the competitive Catholic League. They have scored impressive wins and would love your support. Come to a home game and see our new gym or support the teams on the road where we are usually vastly outnumbered. You will have a great time. Here is a link to our schedules
The spirit and pride of the Class of 2017 when they were honored for reaching the 100% acceptance milestone was memorable. Thank you for all the ways you contribute to making it possible.
