OCTOBER 2016 BREWSLETTER

CLUB MEETING @ AT FROGTOWN BREWERY AND HOMEBREW SHOP: 2931 GILROY ST, LA 90039 – OCTOBER 15TH, 2PM - 6PM

Join us on the 15th at the newly-opened Frogtown Brewery near the 5 Freeway and Fletcher Blvd. Owners Adam and Mike are excited to host us and have offered a 10% discount to club members for homebrew supplies now and in the future. Parking can be limited, so consider taking Metro or Uber, or be prepared to walk a bit. We might be meeting in the shop for legal reasons, but the taproom will be open, and you can bring their beers into the shop to enjoy. It may go without saying, but as a reminder, please leave your commercial beers at home for this meeting and support our hosts.  As an added treat, new member Greg May is bringing a large BBQ beef shoulder to feed and delight the carnivores in the club. We are asking for any volunteers to bring one or some of the following items to go with the BBQ. Please reply to this email and let us know if you can bring:
  • napkins
  • thinly-sliced onion: Red, Vidalia, or Sweet Maui
  • American or other sliced cheese
  • Soft white bread rolls or buns
If you don't eat beef, you can bring food in from elsewhere. Salazar LA is a couple of blocks away and has received some rave reviews.

Tasting glasses are available for $4. These hold about 3 or 4 oz. of your favorite beverage, and have a heavy glass bottom. We still have green t-shirts on sale for $15 each, and a few pint glasses left for $5. We’ll be holding the raffle after announcements, and can always use donations to supplement the usual books, glassware and gift certificates.
THE YEASTSIDE BREWERS 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY
@ OLD OAK CELLARS:
2620 E FOOTHILL BLVD STE D, PASADENA - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17TH, 6PM

Last year's party was such a blast, so why not start a tradition?  Member Dave Lustig has once again graciously agreed to host us for this bash.  Like last year, we will certainly need everyone’s help to make it great.  Start brewing beers to be served at the party - we’ll need lots of kegs and bottles.  This will also be a great opportunity to impress with your favorite holiday potluck dishes, so keep those in mind.  If any brave and talented club chefs want to tackle a main dish for the throng, that would be awesome too.
If you would like to be involved in the planning and execution (volunteers RULE), please email VP Kim  with the subject "Holiday Party" and let him know soon.  Thank you - the party will be as awesome as we make it!
SUPPORT YOUR HOMEBREW CLUB: BECOME A 2017 BOARD MEMBER!

We‘ve begun thinking about who among you will step up, accept the challenge, and help the Yeastside Brewers to continue growing and improving.  Being a board member isn’t a great burden, and becoming more involved in the decisions and actions that shape our club can be very rewarding.  Please reply to this email if you are willing to donate your time and efforts to helping our club operate. As an incentive, your club membership fee is waived for the year as a board member.  Thanks!
CALLING ALL ATHLETES (AND NON-ATHLETES)!
The Maltose Falcons have accepted a softball challenge, so let's put together a team and win for Vin! If you're interested in playing a game of softball or you have some equipment we can borrow, get ahold of Noe at the next meeting or shoot him a text @ (323)393-5060. Play Ball!
COMPETITIONS:

The Pacific Brewers Cup results are in and Yeastsiders captured some more glorious metal!  Ben Wallace and Aaron Rainwater got a silver for their Lawless Czech Pilsner and a bronze for their Wee Smokey Wee Heavy, Mario Artiga got a silver for his NiKOLSCH Scherzinger Kolsch, Brian Drown got a bronze for his Mr. DunkleBok Dunkels Bock, Sam Staley got a silver for his 3 Way Spelt Saison and Josh Jensen got a silver for his Mayan Mocha.  Unfortunately, the California State Homebrew Competition was very early this year and I did not see any announcements until basically too late for entering (unless you love FedEx), so the last competition for Brewer of the Year is the Southern California Regional Homebrew Competition.  We still have not gotten any news about the Southern California Regional Homebrew Competition dates, but the organizers indicated that the dates will be announced soon, so stay tuned!
We will be doing a style tasting of Ciders at our October meeting.  For those of you that agreed to have that style ready, try and have them at the meeting early as we try to do this portion about 30 minutes after the start of the meeting.  The style for November is Sours of all flavors!  December will showcase Winter Warmers, so start thinking about bringing your example!  Remember, this portion of the meeting is for learning both on the tasting side as well as on the brewing side so it is a good excuse to stretch your brewing wings!

Great work and let’s keep taking home medals!
If you have been in the club for a few years, you may know Kyle Hertler. He sent this email to us, looking to sell his equipment and beer cellar stock:

"I was hoping you happened to know of anyone interested in a complete homebrew setup, draft system, and small beer collection. The wife is on my case about the space it's taking up. If you hear of any interest, please shoot them this link: http://goo.gl/GKbxDd. I'm asking $1,200 for everything (beer included), OBO."
See you at Frogtown Brewery on the 15th!
