HELP SAVE THE BETHNAL GREEN GASHOLDERS

Dear Alison Dowsett,

We are writing to you about your site at Marian Place, Bethnal Green, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Rather than demolish the two historic gasholders for the proposed park by the Regent's Canal, over 1400 petitioners are asking you to retain and refurbish two gasholder guideframes as enclosures for playgrounds in the park.

The online petition was drafted before the formation of your company, so please regard the attached petition as addressed to yourselves and/or shareholders: National Grid plc and The Berkeley Group Holdings plc. Obviously, we are aware of the fact that English Heritage has recommended the DCMS to issue a Certificate of Immunity. However, for all the reasons set out in my attached letter of March 2015 to the DCMS and my attached Note of December 2014, we ask you to consider the advantages of our proposal.

Clearly, the two guideframes (on their in-ground tanks) are magnificent structures and make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the Regent's Canal Conservation Area in both Tower Hamlets and Hackney.  They will also enhance your housing development and make it one of the most distinctive and sought-after in London. Together with the walls and partly-infilled coal barge basin in Haggerston Park, you will also develop your only site in London capable of being a meaningful memorial to the internationally important London gas industry.

letter of march and attached note 20 1014

Yours sincerely,

Tom Ridge
