Updates and Resources about Returning to In Person Instruction:

Take the Parent Survey  -  TODAY!

Take the Parent School Survey!

Our annual parent school survey is an important way for you to share your thoughts about your child's school. This feedback will help both the school and our district as a whole. In fact, data from the survey directly generates funding for OUSD and helps us better serve all students.

Please take a few moments to fill out the survey for each of your students. Survey available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Khmer

Author Zetta Elliott's visit to Emerson on March 26th was a big success, with over 150 attendees, and lots of great student questions asked and answered. One student asked, "What is your favorite room in your house?" The author responded by standing up with her laptop and giving us an impromptu tour of her house, including her "ancestor wall" of framed photographs. All 13 chapters of Dragons in a Bag read by Ms. Vetter are still available and useful when you don't have time to read a bedtime story yourself.

Claremont Middle School Seeks Community Participation

Message to Families!

Hi Emerson Families!

Introducing SORA for Ebooks and Audiobooks!!

OUSD students now have access to ebooks and audiobooks through an app called Sora by Overdrive. Sora is easy to use and has a great selection of books. In addition to accessing OUSD content, kids can get to Oakland Public Library ebooks and audiobooks through the Sora app without using a library card!

Kids sign into Sora using their OUSD student username and password. Kids can sign in through Clever, a browser, or the Sora app. Want to know more? Visit the Sora Resource Page or click this link: Sora Introduction Video 1:46 HERE

Give it a try!

As you explore Sora with your child, look for "eReadalongs" at the top of the cover image -- these are both ebooks and audiobooks at the same time. Your child may have already listened to Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews during library class, and possibly a few pages from Jazz by Walter Dean Myers, but we didn't have time for the whole book. I hope you will enjoy these books together, and discover other books your children are excited to read!

If you have any questions or would like some reading recommendations, please contact me. I would love to hear from you!

Happy reading!
Jennifer Vetter

THANK YOU to all the Families, Teachers, Staff and Community who generously contributed their time and dollars to help bridge the funding gap in Oakland Public Education!!

Wow, we are still basking in the afterglow of Saturday’s Virtual Finish Line event and the ride report from a small faction of riders who took it upon themselves to organize a mini bubble ride to Sacramento.

In case you missed it, here’s the link to Saturday’s hour-long event (starting a few minutes in because we forgot to press “record”!). The highlight, without a doubt, was the students’ personal messages of how they feel after almost a year of distance learning, as well as the photos you submitted for your personal R4R virtual challenges.

All in all, we have raised more than $120,000 as of today, with more coming in every day.* This is an impressive number that we are all proud of as we were unsure how this virtual version of R4R would be received. We are hopeful that we’ll be able to tuck into each other's jet stream all the way to Sacramento as a unified team next year. So, please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 23, 2022 for R4R's great return to Sacramento.

In gratitude,
The R4R Planning Team

*We’ll keep your fundraising pages active until May 31st, in case a few more donations trickle in. If you have any checks to turn in, please include your name for appropriate credit and mail them to Ride 4A Reason, PO Box 11386, Oakland, CA  94611. All checks should be made payable to "Claremont Middle School PTA" with "R4R" in the memo line.

P.S. Watch out for our Fundraising Incentive Pick Up date in late May!

Special Thanks to our Emerson Community!

One of Our Emerson Families Needs Our Help!

A student of Ms. Mari's has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare degenerative genetic condition, Aspartylglucosaminuria (AGU). There is no known cure and his condition will eventually be fatal if they do not find a cure. A group of people who have children who have this condition have already done pre-clinical trials for possible gene therapy that looks very promising. They have started a gofundme to try to raise money for trials in human patients.  More information on this condition and a link to their GoFundMe is below.

"My student could be more or less cured and live a normal life if this can work and he could have the treatment completed by early 2022.
So, this year, for my birthday, all I ask is that you donate to this cause as much or as little as you can so that my student can start his treatment. THANK YOU!" – Mari Reyes

Mari Reyes is a beloved K-2 Verbal Behavior SDC teacher, M.S at Emerson Elementary School.
