This month's neighborhood updates
Last month the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council voted to move its meeting start time to 6pm. This should better accommodate the busy schedules of current participants as well as all the folks who've expressed an interest in attending. A postcard reminder should be arriving this week. Please note it on your calendar!

There are just three remaining dates for the Emerson-Garfield Farmers' Market this season. Like last year, the season finale on Friday, October 17 will feature a cider press (you can bring or buy your own apples for pressing). It will also be your last chance to stock up on late-season local produce without heading out to Green Bluff. Check out the market at 806 W Knox every Friday from 3-7pm until then. This Friday a limited number of $20 dump passes will be available there for E-G residents.

Our neighborhood was awarded the two Greening Neighborhoods Grants we applied for. One will complete the median planting on N. Maple. The other will put street trees along several blocks of N. Atlantic and one block of N. Stevens. (More info on those projects here.) The residents and schools who signed up will be given a choice of trees, and we'll be organizing a volunteer planting day soon. We hope you'll take part and help beautify the neighborhood.

The EGNC is also organizing a dedicated Safe Routes to School group with a view to improving walkability to Garfield and Audubon Elementaries as well as the new Spokane Public Montessori at Havermale. We'd like to pool resources with PTOs, parents and principals in working toward this goal — so please get in touch before an accident reminds us how much we need safer school routes here in E-G.

WCCC rummage sale

The West Central Community Center is holding its annual Rummage Sale this Saturday and Sunday, October 4 (7am to 3pm) and 5 (8am to 12pm). They'll have clothing, accessories, housewares, books, tools, sporting goods and plenty more for sale. Call (509) 323-7517 for details. To stay updated on all the WCCC's news and events, be sure to sign up for their monthly e-newsletter.

Emerson-Garfield goes international

A neighborhood business called House of Nations places international ESL students into home-stays with Spokane families. This provides a great avenue to learn about other cultures while bringing in a little extra income. Interested? Contact the company via their website or Facebook page.

Craftwalk: many vendors, modest turnout

The E-G Farmers' Market's first-ever Craftwalk on September 26 was hugely successful from a vendor standpoint — more than 25 artists and crafters took part alongside the usual food vendors — but the turnout was quite modest despite the beautiful weather. Please remember that your support of these events organized by neighborhood volunteers really does make a difference and ensures they continue.

Calling for your ideas and involvement

The EGNC plans to apply for CDBG funding for several developing projects. If you have good ideas about what you'd like to see in the neighborhood, make it a point to attend the October 8 neighborhood council meeting, where we'll be soliciting input and discussing these projects.

We're your digital town crier

Are you and your neighbors holding a yard sale? Is your neighborhood business running a special event or promotion? Then be sure to let us know. We're always happy to help get the word out through our neighborhood-oriented social media channels such as our blog, Facebook page and Twitter account.
