The Absolute Best
Multigenerational Family Travel
in Travel Sommelier’s World
remark from a returning TS customer made a real impact on me, "The grandchildren did not need another IPad or Game Boy, but they did need this time away with us". He had returned from a family vacation in Southern Africa and the delight in seeing wildlife and pristine wilderness through the eyes of his children and grandchildren proved to be priceless.

As a brand new father (on that topic, see Charlie below!), I fully appreciate that time, time together, is unequivocally the most precious commodity we have. In this vein, I have selected a small coterie of the absolute best family experiences - products and destinations - around which we tailor multigenerational trips.

It will take a little time to get everyone’s calendars to align, so get cracking on planning…and in the meantime, travel well, travel often and travel with us!

Castleton Lodge at Singita
Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Castleton is the owner’s “villa" (more accurately a compound) on one of the most storied BIG 5 luxury game reserves on the African continent. The lodge comes with its own attentive and exceptional staff, chef and private Safari vehicle. Wildlife is literally on your doorstep, while in-lodge activities include a tennis court, gymnasium, archery, a training pool and an exceptional wine cellar…and do not forget the opportunity to cook with the chef. The only conundrum you will have is deciding by how many days to extend your stay!

Villa Santorini Luxury Beach Villa, Mozambique
The villa is perched on a ridge with sweeping views of the Mozambique channel and the Bazaruto archipelago of islands. It offers direct access to a near deserted strip of beach that is both wide and interminably long.  Excursions to deserted islands, family beach picnics, fishing and diving are among the multitude of activities; however, my favorite pastime is to simply grab a book and a cocktail on the deck and watch
a stunning mosaic unfold as the tide recedes in the channel in front of me - I have never seen anything like it.

Tarkuni Villa at
Tswalu Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Tswalu richly deserves all of the accolades that come its way. It is unrivaled in South Africa as an ecology in which to view distinct and different species of wildlife - Aardvark, Meerkat, Honey Badger, Black Rhino…the list goes on. It offers guests the opportunity for immersive and authentic involvement in conservation programs and projects. In addition, families can visit the rural community school and health clinic. Tarkuni Villa is nestled in a magnificent valley, complete with its own watering hole to which wildlife flocks for your porch-viewing pleasure, and it truly feels like coming home every night.

Grootbos Private Eco Paradise, South Africa
I The only location in Southern Africa where you can see the Marine BIG 5! Grootbos is a nature preserve that showcases the Cape Floral Kingdom in all of its glory, from abundant fynbos to a 1000 year old Milkwood forest. The private villa gifts sweeping views of Walker Bay and whale sightings are ubiquitous. Shark cage diving in the world famous Shark Alley is a short drive away. The preserve has a foundation that executes world class social upliftment in local communities, from soccer programs to landscaping courses, and guests are encouraged to participate. Throw in horseback riding on the beach, the country’s best zip lining experience and wine tasting in the local appellation, and it becomes apparent why families return frequently to the villa.

Bartholomeus Klip Country Farmhouse, South Africa
This Victorian farmhouse ticks so many boxes - food, wine, romance, activity and enveloping luxury. Set on a vast 4000 plus acre working sheep and wheat farm in the heart of the Swartland (a quick one hour drive from Cape Town), this is a true family farm. Your day can start with a lesson in sheep shearing, followed by a stint on one of the farm’s combine harvesters - truly unique. Lunch with the farmhands can lead into an afternoon of biking and fishing or hands-on cookery classes at the farm’s own cooking school. The most cutting edge wines in SA are crafted in adjacent vineyards and after a day of tasting wines, local preserves and artisanal foods, you might return to the farm for a family style lakeside dinner.

AND…my personal TRUE NORTH…

North Island, Seychelles!
No list of our best family vacation spots would be complete without the island dubbed "Noah’s Ark". This private island in the heart of the Indian Ocean now offers ‘Children stay for free’ , which is huge! I have watched children marvel at 200 plus year-old tortoises while they explore the island on bikes or golf carts and families enjoy message-in-a-bottle style beach picnics. This is a place and a time of true abandon as each family’s private staff anticipates every conceivable need or desire!  Children have their own mini-villa within each beachside family “compound” and they will be fully entertained if and when the adults want to enjoy the spa or more adult aspects of the island.

I guarantee very few things in my business, but I guarantee this: you will not want to leave North Island and henceforth, wherever you travel and whatever you do, all will be judged against the standard that is North Island.
