DH Projects Budding
Dear Dental Hygiene Colleagues,
Happy Spring, Happy:
- A new month
- Push yourself
- Inspire others
- Laugh lots!!
Professional Tool Kit: The month of April brings new beginnings! Your DHASNY Board of Directors met on the weekend of April 5th. All the initiatives we planned back in January are in full swing and timelines are being met. A tool kit for the Collaborative Practice Dental Hygienist is being developed to focus on Public/Community Health.
Caring for Kids: DHASNY’s tool kit project for the School Readiness Oral Assessments forms will be ready to download from our website by early this summer. It is our intention to keep track of the number of forms RDHs sign, in order to document the success of having dental hygienists doing assessments under the new law. Lastly, we are developing a statewide campaign for an Early Childhood Dental Home. Letters and posters will be available to go out to pediatricians, gynecologists and community centers to encourage parents or caregivers to have a dental home for their children by the age of one.
Speaking of Fluoridation: Also in April, I attended, along with Christine Rogers, our VP of Governmental Affairs, the New York State Dental Foundation’s Water Fluoridation Speaker’s Training session. We met Jane McGinley, Fluoridation and Preventive Health Activities Manager of the ADA, and former President of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association, pictured above, center. It is tragic to realize the number communities in our state that do not have the benefit of fluoridated water, that many have taken for granted for the prevention of dental caries for the last 70 years.
Finally, we are here to represent our dental hygienists at the table with like-minded organizations or with letters of support to further our mission of access to dental care and the advancement of our profession. Your support through membership is critical to our success. Your active participation is always welcomed! Please feel free to contact me, Beth Krueger, Executive Director, or your local component with comments, suggestion, or volunteer opportunities. Next stop…”Healthy Kid’s Day” at the Capitol on May 7th!
Yours in dental health,
Watch for our May issue for news of RDHs educating moms on oral health practices - and more.
