CALL FOR TWO TRIP LEADERS AND TWO ASSISTANT TRIP LEADERS FOR THE 2017 LSSC SKI TRIPS!

We need volunteers from club members to lead both the downhill (Banff, Canada, and Park City, Utah) and x-country (Minocqua, Sun Valley, Ironwood) ski trips .

In addition to the social return of meeting and making friends with all of the members on the trip, the leader of a trip will receive a $150.00 voucher to be used as payment for future LSSC activities.  Although past experience is preferable, other interested members should have at least taken two ski trips with the club.  The director of western downhill ski trips will be available to support the leaders in their activities.

Interested members should contact John Grubbs, vice president & western ski director @ 312 867 1135, or grubbs_j@sbcglobal.net, for more information.

Park City, Utah Downhill - January 11 - 17, 2017

What a way to start off the 2017 Ski Season!

The thrills are everywhere at Park City Mountain Resort --skiing, snow-boarding, tubing, sledding, and laughing. The base of the Park City Mountain Resort is 6,900 feet above sea level. The top of Jupiter Peak is 10,000 feet.  It is named among the top resorts in North America every year. This season looks to continue that distinction thanks to more than $10 million in improvements. These upgrades feature a new high-speed lift with access to more than 2,000 acres of terrain and the complete renovation of our Mid-Mountain Lodge.

And Deer Valley Resort revolutionized the ski industry by providing the first-class service one would receive at a five-star hotel. The resort offers 21 chairlifts, 100 ski runs, six bowls, 11 restaurants and more! Take the Castle Lookout to Protection Mountain trail to see the original auto-route through Banff National Park or climb gradually through lodge pole pine forests to the Shadow Lake trail from the Red Earth Creek trail.  There are many classic cross country trails around the town of Banff, ranging from easy to moderate.  Venture through dense forest to the Brewster Creek Junction, enjoy pleasant rolling terrain in the Cascade Valley, and go night skiing under the stars at the Tunnel Mountain Campground Trailer Court.

AMISHLAND BIKE TRIP

Forty-five enthusiastic adults enjoyed a very hot weekend of biking and sightseeing in Amishland, IN in July.  Highlights of the weekend included biking on a paved bike path with wildflowers dotting the landscape, a real county fair known to be one of the largest with lots of farm animals including some goats and fancy chickens, and a fun brewery in the heart of Goshen.  For those who didn't bike there was plenty to do and for those who did bike the trail was terrific and the backroads were quiet and quaint with horse drawn buggies along the way.  Lakeshore welcomed a few new guests and several members of the Evanston Bike Club.  It was fun hearing about the various activities that the different clubs sponsor and making new friends who also enjoy outdoor activities.

3rd ANNUAL PADDLE BOARD EVENT

On Sunday, August 7th at Montrose beach with 14 participants. The weather gods were with us, temps in the mid-80's and a calm lake and not much wind. After some brief instructions, we headed out to get our balance and zip around. Falling off was no problem with warm lake temps.

Paddle boarding is great for off-season fitness, engaging the core muscles to propel yourself forward and to keep your balance when an unexpected wave appears. After paddling, the group met for lunch on The DOCK, the best restaurant and bar of any Chicago beach. The beer selection is outstanding and all the food was good, particularly the guacamole and chips.  Good time had by all-see you next year!

LSSC UNDER THE STARS

15 of us gathered under the stars on a perfect Saturday evening in Millennium
Park at the Grant Park Music Festival. The concert was a treat-Mozart's Mass in C minor as well the world premier of "The Cosmic Garden in Bloom", a rich and impressive piece, written by the contemporary composer, Michael Gandolfi. We had some surprise additions to our group- some LSSC members from former decades (1970's) who saw the LSSC banner and joined us, as well as a few guests of club members.
