Greek Town Dinner

October 10, 2014
This year, due to overwhelming requests, we are returning to the award winning THE PARTHENON  restaurant, a Chicago Greek town leader since 1968.  Join 80 of your Lake Shore friends for another fabulous dinner party in our own private setting. Symbolizing the birthplace of Western Civilization, the Parthenon is one of Greece’s proudest achievements standing majestically on the renowned hilltop that is the Acropolis of Athens.  Naming this restaurant after this architectural wonder carries a deep responsibility for excellence; the owners Chris, Yanna and Chef Sotiris never take this obligation lightly. The emphasis at The Parthenon is on great food, so bring a healthy appetite. The cuisine is among the best in the area.
We will start with appetizers of Saganaki (flamed cheese with the customary OPAA!), Taramousalata (pink caviar spread), crusty bread, Egg-Lemon soup, Greek salad, and Roditys wine.  Main course includes Gyros with tsatsiki, Rotisserie-Roasted Lamb, Pastitsio [macaroni baked with meat sauce, béchamel and kefalotiri cheese], Rice pilaf, Lemon Roasted Potatoes and Spanakopita [spinach-herbs – feta cheese pie]. A VEGETARIAN or GLUETEN FREE dinner option is available.  Of course we will end with Baklava (philo, nuts and honey), Galaktoboureko (light custard in philo) and coffee or tea.  There is more than enough for anybody’s tastes or desires.  Don’t miss this real Greek dinner party and the fun return to Greek Town.

Red Mountain, BC
Join us as we check out this undiscovered gem just north of the border in the Monashee range in central British Columbia.  This is not to be confused with skiing in the Rockies – it’s a whole different experience with 2,900 vertical feet at a moderate altitude (base is below 4,000 feet).  You’ll never see crowds or lift lines.

Getting there is half the fun.  As the bus takes us north from Spokane, we’ll pass through rolling hills and follow a river before we begin our climb into the mountains as we approach the Canadian border.  We’ll stay slopeside at the Slalom Creek Condos that can’t be beat for luxury – each condo has its very own outdoor hot-tub on the balcony.  And, upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a Complimentary Welcome Reception in the Rafters Apres Ski Bar.

Trip also includes
  • Snow Cat skiing on newly-opened terrain that includes plenty of trails for intermediate as well as advanced skiers.  If you’ve never tried cat skiing this is your opportunity.  If there is sufficient interest, we’ll rent a cat for a day as a group, at about $80 per person.
  • Day trip to Whitewater resort, known for its exceptional powder (40+ feet per season).  Bus excursion, lift ticket, and a two-hour stop in the historic town of Nelson for dinner, are all included (dinner on your own).
  • Superb cross-country skiing available at Blackjack (two minutes away by free shuttle), with trails for both classic and skate-style skiing.

Club Med Ski Break on the Turks & Caicos Islands
(not an official LSSC trip)
Saturday 2/21/15 through Saturday 2/28/15

Join Julie and Dave Hicks as they return to their favorite all inclusive Caribbean vacation/snorkeling resort for a break from the Chicago winter.  The ocean and the air temperatures hover around 80 degrees in February at this adults only Club Med resort with gorgeous white sandy beaches, great water sports, awesome buffet meals, dancing every night, and a 4-star TripAdvisor rating.  Check it out at  Activities include Scuba Diving (at extra cost), Paddle Boarding, Sail Boating, Snorkeling, Wind Surfing, Tennis, and circus school.   Registration is through the Club Med website or by phone at 1-888-WEB-CLUB (1-888-932-2582).  Club Med uses airline-type demand pricing, so the current cost of $1139 per person, double-occupancy, plus air, will gradually increase each month.  If we collectively book 8 or more rooms, we will qualify for incentives such as free wifi, boutique shop discounts, etc.

CONTACT:  Julie Hicks at 630-803-6422 or
REGISTRATION: Air and Club Med arrangements made by participant. Please RSVP on MeetUp so we can qualify for incentives!

Paddleboarding on Lake Michigan

Twenty Four Adventurous souls met at the Stand Up Paddle Boarding Hut at North Avenue Beach to try their hand at Paddleboarding. By 10 am, we where geared up with paddles and life jackets and then headed down to the water front for a lesson on the particulars of Paddleboarding. Our two instructors helped us onto our boards and off we went.

What a beautiful day. The skies cleared for us, temperature was in the 80’s, and the water was quite calm (though a bit cold).

All of us were standing on the boards in an amazingly short period of time.  We paddled down to Fullerton, navigating the waves that were created from motor boats passing by.  It was a great site seeing so many Lake Shore Ski Club members standing on their boards with the Chicago Skyline in the background. I heard the majority of the group did take a quick dip in the lake, but learned quickly to scramble back on their boards and pop back on their feet.

We finished up by gathering for a lunch of Subway sandwiches, chips and pop while lounging on our beach towels on a sand mound that isolated us from the crowds but allowed us to clearly see our beautiful surroundings.

LakeShore Accepting Credit Cards

The club is accepting credit card payments directly on the website! You will be able to pay your membership renewal and fees for most events without getting out the checkbook.  THERE IS ONLY ONE CAVEAT:  The website will only allow you to pay up to $500 at a time, but you can make multiple back-to-back payments if you need to pay for more than $500 worth of events.

Q: Who is paying for the credit card fee?
A: The club will carry the credit card fees so there will be no difference in cost between a credit card payment and a cash or check payment
Q: Will I still be able to pay with a check?
A: Of course!  You can continue to pay by check as you do today if you so wish.  There are no plans to change this.
Q: Is there a limit on the amount I can pay with a credit card?
A: Somewhat.  The website will only allow you to pay up to $500 at a time, but you can make
multiple payments if you sign up for more than $500 worth of events.  Again, please do not
attempt to pay for the Isle Royale trip this way.
Q: Will you still accept Paypal?
A: We will not accept Paypal for membership and events during the credit card trial.
Q: What happens if I need to cancel?
A: At the moment we cannot reverse charges so we will write you a check for any refund.
Q: Can I pay for someone else's registration with a credit card?
A:  No, each person still needs to pay for themselves when they are logged into the site.  You can of
course use the same card for multiple accounts.

Q: How quickly are the credit card payments processed?
A: It depends on some back end processes, but the usual experience is almost immediately
Q: Will there still be an early bird discount for membership?
A: Yes, and it’s even easier to take advantage of now!
