Did you Know?

All members receive emails from the club on a periodic basis unless they unsubscribe from our mailing list.   How do you know if you've missed a club email?  You should definitely get:

  • an email about the social meeting (sent on the Sunday before the social meeting, which is on the 3rd Wednesday of each month), or
  • a Liftline (sent on the first of each  month).
If you're not getting club emails, try joining here.  If you still don't get our emails (or if you're not sure), write to the webmaster@lssc.org.

Are You Signed up?

Whenever you sign up for a trip or event on the website you will get an email within seconds confirming that you have registered.  Please make sure to always check your email after registering, including your "junk" or "bulk mail" folder.  After 5 - 10 minutes, if you don't receive an email, you didn't complete the registration.  Maybe you didn't hit the "Next" button all the way to the last screen and click "Complete Registration"?  Maybe your computer timed out?  We cannot know why it didn't "stick", but if you don't get that email you should contact the event leader or the webmaster (webmaster@lssc.org) to check that you are signed up.

Social Media

Another Way to be Social!

Have you been to a social meeting before?  It is one way to get chatting about upcoming trips or social events.
Another way to stay in contact with your LSSC friends between trips is to chat with them on Facebook or Meetup.
We know you love receiving club newsletters and email notifications, but it's a one way communication.
We hope you will enjoy chatting about upcoming trips, and telling us how much fun you had, on these platforms.  For instructions about how to post, visit lssc.clubexpress.com/faq and click on "sharing/social".

Enjoy the five mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado including the just-opened Peak 6 that is served by a brand new 6-person chairlift.  This is true “back-bowl” country except with the convenience of lift access, so intermediate skiers are able to experience true open-bowl skiing above the tree line.

Red Mountain, BC

www.lssc.clubexpress.com/Dh_RedMtn
Join us as we check out this undiscovered gem just north of the border in the Monashee range in central British Columbia.  This is not to be confused with skiing in the Rockies – it’s a whole different experience with 2,900 vertical feet at a moderate altitude (base is below 4,000 feet).  You’ll never see crowds or lift lines.

Getting there is half the fun.  As the bus takes us north from Spokane, we’ll pass through rolling hills and follow a river before we begin our climb into the mountains as we approach the Canadian border.  We’ll stay slopeside at the Slalom Creek Condos that can’t be beat for luxury – each condo has its very own outdoor hot-tub on the balcony.  And, upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a Complimentary Welcome Reception in the Rafters Apres Ski Bar.

Trip also includes
  • Snow Cat skiing on newly-opened terrain that includes plenty of trails for intermediate as well as advanced skiers.  If you’ve never tried cat skiing this is your opportunity.  If there is sufficient interest, we’ll rent a cat for a day as a group, at about $80 per person.
  • Day trip to Whitewater resort, known for its exceptional powder (40+ feet per season).  Bus excursion, lift ticket, and a two-hour stop in the historic town of Nelson for dinner, are all included (dinner on your own).
  • Superb cross-country skiing available at Blackjack (two minutes away by free shuttle), with trails for both classic and skate-style skiing.

Elkhorn, WI and the South Kettle Bike & Hiking Trip
June 6-June 8.

LSSC members started arriving at the Hampton Inn mid-afternoon on Friday, setting up the Welcome Wine & Cheese party.  Lots of chardonnay, lots of crudités…and by 7pm, lots of hikers & bikers.

After the Hampton Inn free breakfast on Saturday morning, the hikers & bikers assembled in front of the hotel for the official picture.   It was sunny and the temperature reached 82 degrees.  11 hikers set out for the South Kettle‘s Scuppernong Trailhead and a 10 mile hike.  Mosquitoes accompanied these hardy hikers.  8 bikers set out for the White River trailhead for an 11.4 mile ride downstream from Elkhorn thru Springfield & Lyons to Burlington, home of the Nestles Chocolate Experience Museum.  After lunching in either Lyons or Springfield, the bikers continued uphill to the trailhead.  Next stop,  the Hampton Inn pool, and a pre-dinner visit to the remnants of the Welcome Wine & Cheese.

Dinner was various delicious fish entrees at the Trout House & Rushing Waters Fisheries.  As we drove back to the Hampton Inn after dinner, we passed about 100 runners, who were doing a 100 mile in 24 hours run, running in the dark of South Kettle Moraine.  Some bikers ended the night at the Culver’s next to the hotel; nobody ran the 100 miles.  Sunday was cool, windy & overcast, as we packed up and left Elkhorn.

June Social Meeting Recap

We changed our June Social meeting to Millennium and had a great turnout (of course good weather helped).   33 people attended to hear our orchestra's  terrific music with plenty of  time to socialize with old and new friends.  Don't forget to join us at our July Social Meeting at the Navy Pier Beer Garden on 7/23.

LakeShore to Test Accepting Credit Cards

The club has started a test of accepting credit card payments directly on the lssc.org website! You will be able to pay your membership renewal and fees for most events without getting out the checkbook.

The trial will run until the end of July when both feedback from members and the back-end experience will be evaluated. At that time, a decision will be made about whether to continue accepting credit cards for the 2014/15 ski season and under what conditions.

During the test period, the club will absorb the additional costs associated with accepting credit cards for membership and most trips and so there will be no difference between the cash/check and credit card price in these cases. Due to the cost of the Isle Royale trip, credit card payments will not be accepted for it.

Q&A
Q: Who is paying for the credit card fee?
A: The club will carry the credit card fees during the trial period and then determine a policy going forward if the trial is successful.

Q: Will I still be able to pay with a check?
A: Of course!  You can continue to pay by check as you do today if you so wish.  There are no plans to change this.

Q: Is there a limit on the amount I can pay with a credit card?
A: Somewhat.  The website will only allow you to pay up to $500 at a time, but you can make multiple payments if you sign up for more than $500 worth of events.  Again, please do not attempt to pay for the Isle Royale trip this way.

Q: Will you still accept Paypal?
A: We will not accept Paypal for membership and events during the credit card trial.

Q: What happens if I need to cancel?
A: At the moment we cannot reverse charges so we will write you a check for any refund.

Q: Can I pay for someone else's registration with a credit card?
A:  No, each person still needs to pay for themselves when they are logged into the site.  You can of course use the same card for multiple accounts.

Q: How quickly are the credit card payments processed?
A: It depends on some back end processes, but the usual experience is almost immediately

Q: Will there still be an early bird discount for membership?
A: Yes, and it’s even easier to take advantage of now!
