MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As we conclude another Academic Year in the Department of Surgery, please allow me to reflect on progress we have made at this midway point in our Strategic Plan, Transforming Surgery: Beyond the Cutting Edge. I was delighted to work with colleagues from numerous Divisions to create our first ever Department of Surgery video entitled, Boundless Promise, a video which underscores the breadth and depth of our Department (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDnpgizz3Oo). In the Education realm, we have begun the Prep Camp for all PGY1 residents to wide acclaim. In addition, competency-based assessments are going to be in place for all Divisions within the next year, well in advance of expectations by the Royal College. Of course, the Division of Orthopaedics continues to lead the way in the world with its comprehensive competency based curriculum (CBC) program. In Research, Michael Fehlings was appointed as the new Vice Chair of Research in the Department. Michael held his first Town Hall Meeting this year with the research community in the Department, and presided over his first Gallie Day with considerable aplomb. In Quality and Best Practices, Robin McLeod has created an organizational committee structure with representation of experts from each Division within the Department of Surgery. This committee has been meeting regularly, and has decided to tackle the issue of “readmissions” to surgical services as its first Departmental initiative. In Faculty Development, Ori Rotstein has developed a robust faculty mentoring program which will be implemented this year. The annual Faculty Development Day, as organized by David Latter, George Christakis, and Ron Levine was held in May, and was a highly successful event. In Integration and Innovation domains, we have developed a unique prospectus that will be published shortly and shared with all faculty members. This prospectus illustrates the tremendous efforts faculty are expending in surgical innovation, global outreach, and discovery. Here, Avery Nathens and Shaf Keshavjee have been leading efforts to engage our faculty members. I am delighted with the progress we have made towards achieving our goals in our Strategic Plan. I should like to express my thanks to Joanna Giddens, Strategic Plan Implementation Coordinator, and Darina Landa, Senior Development Officer, for their devotion to the plan, and for their assistance at each step along the way. It has been a great pleasure for me to lead this tremendous group of talented surgeons over the past 3 years. I look forward to our many future achievements in the years ahead. Until then, please enjoy the summer months in your practices, with your families, and on holidays. I hope to see all of you on the occasion of my Annual Address to the Department of Surgery, Friday September 5th, 2014, at the Allan Waters Auditorium, the Li Ka Shing Learning Institute, St Michael’s Hospital, at 7:30 am.

WebCV information for the academic year 2013-14 will be pulled on Wednesday, July 16. Please ensure that your CV information is up to date, and accurate on WebCV. This will enable us to have the annual report completed by December 31st, 2014. Please note that no exceptions or extensions will be granted.
Professor Trevor Young Named Dean of Medicine
Professor Young, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry has been appointed Dean of Faculty of Medicine effective January 1, 2015. He succeeds Professor Catherine Whiteside who has held the position since 2005. We congratulate Dr. Young on this tremendous achievement and appointment.
Mingyao Liu, Senior Scientist at UHN, and Professor of Surgery, has been named the Interim Director of the IMS beginning July 1, 2014. He has been serving as the Associate Director of the IMS for some time, and has been Associate Dean of Life Sciences of the school of Graduate Studies at UofT.
Darrell Ogilvie-Harris Creates Sculpture of Brick from Lister’s Ward for New Departmental Boardroom
Darrell Ogilvie-Harris has created and generously donated a facsimile of the brick that was embedded above the fireplace in the Departmental Offices at the Banting Institute. The brick was a gift from Professor Irving H. Cameron to the Department of Surgery from Lister’s Ward in the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. Darrell’s bronze sculpture depicts the brick and above which there are the hands of a surgeon which are recessed into the sculpture. This incredible bronze sculpture is now proudly displayed in the Departmental Office Boardroom, next to the official portrait of Joseph Lister which was brought to the Stewart Building from the Banting Institute.
Karen Davis (Neurosurgery) recently created a TED-Ed Talk on how our brain processes pain signals. You can view her talk by going to:
Michael Fehlings (Neurosurgery) has been elected to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS), and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). Congratulations Michael!
Teodor Grantcharov (General Surgery) was the keynote speaker at the Surgical Skills Summit hosted by McMaster University Health Sciences.
Mark Peterson (Cardiac Surgery) and his team successfully placed a Fortis trans-catheter mitral valve in a patient. This is a rapidly evolving technology for critically ill patients and represents the first implant in North America and the 5th implant in humans. The valve is indicated for patients with severe native mitral valve regurgitation in high risk patients who are not good candidates for the MitraClip.
Julian Spears (Neurosurgery) has been appointed as Term Chair, Cerebrovascular and Brain Tumour Surgery at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto.
Michael Tymianski (Neurosurgery) was featured in an article May 28 in the Globe and Mail. “Stroke drug approved for pilot program”. It is hoped that paramedics will eventually be able to administer his medication to stroke patients in Toronto in the ambulance to protect the brain cells. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health/stroke-drug-approved-for-pilot-program-with-toronto-paramedics/article18901898/
