MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
I welcome all of you back for the start of the 2013-14 Academic Year in the Department of Surgery.  This past year, I am pleased to report that we achieved our goals for our top priorities.  All programs in Surgery were accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons last spring, we surpassed last year's record of grant capture and peer reviewed publications, all faculty who went forward for promotion were promoted at the Decanal Committee, we implemented many of our Year 1 goals with our Strategic Plan, and we raised more funds than ever before in the Department of Surgery.   As you know, our offices have moved to the Stewart Building from the Banting, and we welcome all of you to come see our new space which is perfectly designed to bring together the offices of many of our Divisions, and to hold Divisional and Departmental meetings.  I had the great privilege of meeting with many of you last year to learn how you are doing in your practices and academic careers, and I will continue to do the same this year.  We welcomed 46 of the best and brightest PGY1 residents from across Canada to begin their postgraduate training in Surgery.  To help speed them along their way, we held the first ever "Prep Camp" from July 2 – 12 at the Surgical Skills Centre where they all benefitted from targeted didactic lectures, and an opportunity to learn bench-top surgical procedures including arterial cut downs, chest tube insertions, bladder catheterizations, and suturing techniques to name a few.  This year, one of our priorities will be to ensure that we capture all the teaching activities of our faculty, as all teaching counts towards an assessment of academic productivity.  Our goals this year are to develop competency-based assessment programs in all Divisions, to continue to support research through alternative revenue streams, to establish a comprehensive quality/best practices program across all Divisions, to install our faculty into higher leadership positions, and to build on our international outreach and global influence.  I look forward to working with all of you towards achieving our goals this year.

Sincerely,

James T. Rutka, MD, PhD, FRCSC
RS McLaughlin Chair
