MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As another academic year in the Department of Surgery draws to a close, I thought I would use this opportunity to review some of the many achievements and accomplishments of our faculty.  Robin McLeod and colleagues received an ARTIC grant from the Council of Academic Hospital of Ontario (CAHO) to implement the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) guidelines.  Charles Tator was the recipient of the Gallie Award Lectureship at the Canadian Surgery Forum in Calgary, September 14th, 2012.  On October 26th, Paul Greig (General Surgery) organized a highly successful reunion of hepatobiliary and transplant alumni who trained under Dr. Bernard Langer.  As Director of the Surgical Skills Centre (SSC) at Mt Sinai Hospital,  Oleg Safir (Orthopaedics) led the SSC to full accreditation by the American College of Surgeons for another 3 year term.  Special thanks are also given to Lisa Satterthwaite in this review.  As Chair of the Ontario Medical Association Negotiations Committee, Wayne Tanner (Vascular Surgery) helped to formulate a much needed, new agreement between Ontario physicians and the Ministry of Health.  Michael Taylor (Neurosurgery) and colleagues described the subgroup-specific variation across 1,000 medulloblastoma genomes (Nature 488: 49, 2012).  Andres Lozano (Neurosurgery) and colleagues reported on the novel use of MR-guided focused ultrasound to create lesions successfully in the thalamus of patients with essential tremor (Lancet Neurology 12: 462, 2013).  Subodh Verma (Cardiac Surgery) received the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Gold Medal Award in Surgery.  Dimitri Anastakis (PRS) served as the President of the Association of Surgical Education.  Ron Levine (PRS) was the recipient of the 2013 Mickle Award from the PGME Office.  Carol Anne Moulton (General Surgery) received the 2013 PAIRO Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award.  Michael Fehlings (Neurosurgery) received the 2012 Jonas Salk Award for scientific achievements given by the March of Dimes Canada.  At the 39th Annual Gallie Day, the George-Armstrong Peters Prize was awarded to Marc Jeschke (PRS), and the Lister Award was given to Avery Nathens.  Robin McLeod (General Surgery) was elected to the position of President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and held an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) working group meeing at which the Honorable Deb Matthews gave opening remarks.  Mark Bernstein (Neurosurgery) received the 2013 American Association of Neurological Surgeons’ Humanitarian Award in New Orleans.  Finally, I should like to thank Ron Levine, Director of Postgraduate Medical Education, and David Latter, Vice Chair Education, for leading us through the successful accreditation of all of our programs in the Department of Surgery this May 2013.  These and many other contributions continue to make me exceedingly proud of the Department of Surgery.  I should like to thank all of you for your continued support.  Please allow me to extend my best wishes to all for a happy and enjoyable summer.

38th Annual William S. Keith Professorship in Neurosurgery 

The William S. Keith Professorship in Neurosurgery was held on June 6, 2013.   This year's guest lecturer was Dr. Duke Samson from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.  
 
Endoscopic Neurosurgery Skull Base Course
The first endoscopic endonasal course for neurosurgery and ENT residents was held on Friday, June 7th at the Surgical Skills Centre.  This course was well received and it is hoped to be given on an annual basis.  Special thanks are given to Gelareh Zadeh who organized the course.
 
Vascular Surgery Research Day

The Division of Vascular Surgery hosted its annual Research Day on Friday, June 21, 2013 in the Debates Room at Hart House. Highlights included the “K. Wayne Johnston Lecture in Vascular Surgery”. This year’s Lecturers were Dr. Lewis Schwartz from The University of Chicago Medical Center, and Dr. Bradley Strauss from the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

 
SpineFEST was held on Monday, June 24, 2013 at The Old Mill Inn.  This year’s Visiting Professor was Dr. Alexander Vaccaro who spoke on “Medical Errors, Root Cause Analysis”.

Trauma Rounds

The 36th Annual Assembly of General Surgeons took place on May 30th, 2013 at the Metropolitan Hotel.   The E. Bruce Tovee Lecturer was Dr. Peter Angelos from the University of Chicago.  His lecture was entitled “Surgical Ethics and the Future of Surgical Practice” which was well received by all attendees. Special thanks to Andy Smith and Linda Last for organizing a most successful Annual Assmbly.  
 
First Annual Sunnybrook Burn Symposium

The First Annual Burn Day Symposium was held on June 4, 2013 at the Vaughan Estates and was a great success.  The Walter J. Peters MD Honorary Lecturer was Dr. Richard Gamelli, Senior Vice Present and Provost of Health Sciences at Loyola University of Chicago.  Over 200 attendees took part in the Symposium.  Special thanks to Marc Jeschke for organizing this year’s Burn Symposium.  

Department of Surgery Book Club

The Inaugural Meeting of the Department of Surgery Book Club was held on Monday, June 24, 2013 at the home of Mari and Jim Rutka.   There was a spirited discussion of Jason Karlawish’s book “Open Wound:  The tragic obsession of Dr. William Beaumont”.  Special thanks to Karen Devon for organizing the first book club meeting.  The next book club event will be held in January 2014.  Further details will be forthcoming in the near future. 

10th Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament
 
Thirteen faculty and residents from the Division of Neurosurgery attended the annual softball tournament held in Central Park, New York City on Saturday, June 1, 2013 to benefit the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. While the team beat Yale University in early play, it lost to Mayo Clinic and the University of Miami to be eliminated from playoff contention.

In the News 
Head, Division of General and Thoracic Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children
Dr. Agostino Pierro has been appointed as Head, Division of General and Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children effective April 1, 2013 following Dr. Jack Langer who has recently stepped down after completing two terms.  Dr. Pierro comes to Toronto from Great Ormond Street Hospital and UCL Institute of Child Health in London, UK, where he was the Head of the Surgery Unit.  He is the recipient of numerous research awards, and has 270 peer reviewed journal articles listed and 28 books and book chapters published. 
 


SEAD Program
Twenty first-year medical students from the University of Toronto took part in this year’s Surgical Exploration and Discovery (SEAD) Program held the week of June 17, 2013 at the Surgical Skills Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital.
Launched in 2012, the two-week summer program gives the students time doing simulated surgical procedures. The program is aimed at exposing students to specialties in surgery that best suits their personalities.  The following link is an article that appeared in The Star on Friday, June 21, 2013 on the SEAD program.

Newly Elected Fellows to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS)
Drs. Avery Nathens and John Marshall have recently been elected as Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.  Fellows are elected on the basis of their demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and commitment to advance academic health sciences. 
 
Dr. Andy Smith named Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Executive, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
Dr. Andy Smith has been named as Sunnybrook’s new Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Executive.  He will start his new role on July 1, 2013, taking over from Dr. Keith Rose who will be retiring this summer.
 
Interim Appointments
Dr. Calvin Law has been appointed as the Interim Chief of the Odette Cancer Centre and Interim Regional Vice President for CCO
 
Dr. Todd Mainprize has been appointed as Interim Division Head of Neurosurgery at SHSC.
 
Promotion
Dr. Abdollah Behzadi (Thoracic Surgery) from Credit Valley Hospital has been promoted from Lecturer to Assistant Professor.

Michael Fehlings has received the Farfan Award from the North American Spine Society (NASS).  This award is considered the top spine-related research award internationally.  Dr. Fehlings received the Leon Wiltse clinical research award a few years ago from NASS and is the only scientist to have received both the Wiltse and Farfan Awards.
