MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

 Every so often, it is good to review what the Department of Surgery does for you as a faculty member at the University of Toronto. Of course, everyone knows the role the Department plays in residency training, faculty development, academic promotions, and recruiting new faculty members. But some of you may not know about the schedule of benefits the Department of Surgery provides for all full time faculty. These include health benefits through Sun Life Financial for all new faculty since 2005. Some of these health benefits include accessibility to prescription drugs, dental procedures, and semi-private room coverage in hospital. Also, since 2005, the Department of Surgery covers full-time faculty for critical illness insurance for members under age 57. Should you require this benefit, you would be entitled to a payment of $60,000 from RBC Insurance Company. Finally, for faculty members requiring assistance with day-care, the Department of Surgery provides coverage through Kids and Company (http://www.kidsandcompany.com/index.php) as the day care provider for their children. I firmly believe that these are essential benefits for our faculty, and I do hope that you feel the same.  On March 30th, in the final hockey matches of this academic year, Orthopaedics defeated General Surgery (6 – 5*), and Urology defeated Neurosurgery (4-3*) in hotly contested play.  Martin Barkin (Surgical Alumni) is stepping down as Chair of the Surgical Alumni Association (SAA) having served in this capacity for several years. Under his leadership, the SAA has made significant advancements in its computerized alumni database, outreach to alumni, and planning of numerous alumni events. For his efforts as Chair of the SAA, Martin recently received an Arbor Award from the University of Toronto. Please join me in thanking Martin for his many contributions as Chair of the SAA in the Department of Surgery. Mark Bernstein (Neurosurgery) was introduced in the Senate of Canada on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. He was introduced by the Speaker of the House and a description of his global work was presented by Senator Donald Meredith. Bob Bell (Orthopaedic Surgery; President and CEO UHN) will be stepping down as President and CEO of UHN and will take on the role of Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health to replace Mr. Saad Rafi as of June 2, 2014. Congratulations Bob! Stan Feinberg (General Surgery) has been awarded the 2014 PARO Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award. This prestigious award is given to only two Toronto physicians each year.
