MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

At next month’s Department of Surgery Rounds, we will be celebrating the accomplishments of two of our esteemed faculty members who received the George Armstrong Peters Prize, and the Lister Prize.  As you know, the Peters Prize is given annually to a faculty member in the first 5 years of her/his initial period who has shown outstanding productivity as an independent investigator.  And the Lister Prize is awarded annually to an investigator who has shown outstanding and continuing productivity of international stature.  With this column, I should like to remind all of you about the key roles played by George-Armstrong Peters during his career as a surgeon in Toronto.

Dr Peters graduated from medical school at the University of Toronto in 1886.  He did his internship at the Toronto General Hospital before joining the staff in the Department of Anatomy.  He then traveled to England where he earned both the primary and final exams to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England – one of the first Canadian surgeons to do so.  Upon his return to Toronto, he was appointed to the surgical staff units at both Toronto General Hospital, and Sick Kids.  Among his many contributions over his career, Dr Peters became famous for his closure of wounds with a subcuticular horse-hair suture, his description of the “Peters sign” for the diagnosis of generalized peritonitis, the “Peters operation” to treat bladder exstrophy, and an altogether new method of creating a moulding method for making casts using liquefied paraffin wax.  In the words of Dr William Gallie, Dr Peters was the best surgeon and best surgical teach he had ever known.  Dr Peters served on the Department of Surgery from 1892-1907; and he was Professor of Surgery from 1903-1907.  Sadly, Dr Peters passed prematurely at age 47 of angina pectoris.  In his name and honour, his many friends in surgery established the George Amstrong Peters Prize in 1912.

While the Peters Prize recognizes promising and deserving faculty members in their first 5 years, it is interesting that these recipients frequently go on to achieve great things throughout their entire careers.  Some notable examples of past, early recipients include Dr WE Gallie, Dr FG Banting, Dr FG Kergin, Dr WS Keith, and Dr WG Bigelow, to name a few.  For those of you who wish to read more about the life and times of George Armstrong Peters, I refer you to Dr Gallie’s reminiscences of him in the Canadian Journal of Surgery, Vol 2, pp 119 – 122, 1959.

I am delighted to announce that this year’s Peters Prize recipient is Dr Tony Zhong from the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; and the Lister Prize recipient is Dr Michael Taylor from Neurosurgery.  Their outstanding presentations will be heard on Friday November 4, 7:30 – 8:30 am in the Daniel’s Hollywood Theatre, First Floor Black Wing, Sick Kids Hospital.  I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Sincerely,

James T. Rutka, MD, PhD, FRCSC
