MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
|
||
![]() As many of you know and appreciate, the success of the Department of Surgery rests squarely on the shoulders of its talented faculty, residents and fellows. We are among the most academic Departments of Surgery in the world as measured by our peer reviewed grant capture and high-impact publications. For our faculty to be successful in their academic work, there is no substitute for protected time. However, in a fee-for-service practice setting, it is sometimes difficult to work out mechanisms by which faculty time can be protected, even if there is a transfer of some funds from the practice plans to the surgeons. That is why the establishment of endowed funds and Chairs is critically important for surgeons engaged in research. Accordingly, this past year, I requested our office staff in the Department of Surgery to determine the nature and number of endowed Chairs held by surgeons within the various hospitals at the University of Toronto. The results are not only interesting, but highly encouraging. There are 3 University named chairs (Albert and Temmy Latner, Alma Ricard and Baxter, and Bernard and Ryna Langer Chairs), 4 Joint Hospital – University named chairs, 36 Hospital – University Affiliated named chairs, and 20 Hospital Chairs, for a total of 63 endowed Chair positions that are held by surgeons within the Department of Surgery. These 63 Endowed Chairs amount to approximately $150 Million to help support the academic mission of the hospitals, research institutes, and the University, and to provide the much needed protected time for faculty surgeons to be successful in their academic work. I am delighted that Surgery has been the great beneficiary of such support through the hospital foundations, research institutes and the University. And at the same time, I should like to congratulate those Chairholders in the Department of Surgery for distinguishing themselves to serve in these Chair positions over the past many years. James T. Rutka, MD, PhD, FRCSC RS McLaughlin Chair |
