MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As many of you know and appreciate, the success of the Department of Surgery rests squarely on the shoulders of its talented faculty, residents and fellows. We are among the most academic Departments of Surgery in the world as measured by our peer reviewed grant capture and high-impact publications. For our faculty to be successful in their academic work, there is no substitute for protected time. However, in a fee-for-service practice setting, it is sometimes difficult to work out mechanisms by which faculty time can be protected, even if there is a transfer of some funds from the practice plans to the surgeons. That is why the establishment of endowed funds and Chairs is critically important for surgeons engaged in research. Accordingly, this past year, I requested our office staff in the Department of Surgery to determine the nature and number of endowed Chairs held by surgeons within the various hospitals at the University of Toronto. The results are not only interesting, but highly encouraging. There are 3 University named chairs (Albert and Temmy Latner, Alma Ricard and Baxter, and Bernard and Ryna Langer Chairs), 4 Joint Hospital – University named chairs, 36 Hospital – University Affiliated named chairs, and 20 Hospital Chairs, for a total of 63 endowed Chair positions that are held by surgeons within the Department of Surgery. These 63 Endowed Chairs amount to approximately $150 Million to help support the academic mission of the hospitals, research institutes, and the University, and to provide the much needed protected time for faculty surgeons to be successful in their academic work. I am delighted that Surgery has been the great beneficiary of such support through the hospital foundations, research institutes and the University. And at the same time, I should like to congratulate those Chairholders in the Department of Surgery for distinguishing themselves to serve in these Chair positions over the past many years.

HONOURS AND AWARDS
Tim Daniels (Orthopaedics) is the recipient of 2 awards at the Combined Meeting of International Federation of Foot and Ankle Societies (IFFAS) and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) in Chicago, September 19-21, 2014. 1/ Takakura Award for Best Clinical Paper entitled, “Multi-centered study titled 'Patient Expectation and Satisfaction as Measures of Surgical Outcomes in End-Stage Ankle Arthritis: A Prospective Cohort Study of Ankle Joint Replacement vs Ankle Fusion”. 2/ Roger Mann Award for Best Clinical Paper presented at the Annual AOFAS 2014 meeting for a paper entitled, “Multi-Centered Prospective Comparison of PROMIS Physical Function CAT to Traditional Instruments for Foot and Ankle Disorders”.
Bernard Langer (Professor Emeritus, General Surgery) has been inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. He is recognized as a true innovator, a gifted surgeon and respected teacher. Dr. Langer’s reputation for clinical excellence was unsurpassed during his surgical career. Considered a global pioneer of hepatobiliary/pancreatic (HPB) surgery, he developed a world leading academic HPB and liver transplant service while head of the division of surgery at Toronto General Hospital. As chair of the department of surgery at the University of Toronto, Dr. Langer established the first surgical full time practice plan in Canada to foster research and education, and developed the Surgeon Scientist Program, now a widely recognized and emulated model for training academic surgeons in Canada and in other countries. This program and its graduates constitute one of Dr. Langer’s enduring legacies. Dr. Langer was also instrumental in the creation of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Clinician Investigator Program and in the formation of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. Dr. Langer will be honoured at a ceremony on April 23, 2015 at The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Paul Karanicolas (General Surgery) received a PSI grant to support his multicenter randomized trial examining the impact of tranexamic acid on bleeding during liver resection.
