MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
 Faculty Development

The academic literature continually emphasizes the importance of ongoing training, organizational support, mentorship, and peer-to-peer interaction in the overall success of a work environment. The Department of Surgery certainly believes in this philosophy, as our accomplishments are entirely the result of ever-inspired and continually hard-working faculty members.

The Stepping Stones Teacher Development Program, offered through the Center for Faculty Development (CFD) at St. Michael’s Hospital, is an accredited program that assists teachers with educational and teaching roles. Participants will accumulate training through workshops, presentations, and a monthly journal club. This is an excellent opportunity for faculty members to develop clinical appraisal skills of the health care education literature, to learn to introduce evidence-based strategies for teaching into the clinical context, and to implement and initiate changes in educational activities.

The New and Emerging Academic Leadership (NEAL) Program is intended to develop the academic leader in terms of intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, and system knowledge – crucial aspects that extend beyond the academic expertise.

The Education Scholars Program (ESP) is a longitudinal leadership program for health professional educators. The program prepares leaders for their careers through scholarly integration and developing the necessary skills for building a community of practice.

The CFD also offers a multitude of accredited workshops and rounds, such as the Best Practices in Education Rounds (BPER) aimed at linking health education research with clinical practice.

I should also like to acknowledge the formalization of our Mentorship Program, spearheaded by Ori Rotstein and Paul Greig. Our Mentorship Program Committee facilitates the assignment of a Career Development Mentor for junior faculty members; an arrangement that is explicitly stated and accepted in the Memorandum of Agreement. The Career Development Mentor offers confidential professional/academic and lifestyle guidance, and steers the mentee towards effective career decision-making that will increase the likelihood of a successful Continuing Appointment Review (CAR). It is our objective to extend this program to middle and later-career faculty in the near future.

As we head towards the end of another academic year, I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. Enrolment deadlines are held throughout the spring, and programs often begin in September or January. Through a commitment to faculty development, our Department contributes to teaching, clinical, and personal activities in a meaningful way on a local, national, and international level.  For more information on faculty development in the Department of Surgery and in the Faculty of Medicine please go to:  http://surgery.utoronto.ca/faculty/Mentoring_Program.htm and https://cfd.utoronto.ca

Sincerely,
