MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
It is worth repeating at this time that the Department of Surgery expects all full time faculty to be using WebCV to keep their latest achievements and accomplishments up to date.  You may recall, that we have been migrating to the WebCV format, hospital by hospital, over the past 3 years.  The costs associated with using WebCV, and having it updated periodically, are borne by the Department of Surgery, and by the Surgeon-in-Chiefs at the hospitals.  WebCV is particularly useful this time of year as we embark on our review of each faculty member through the Assessment of Academic Productivity (AAP) exercise.  We can readily extract your data on WebCV, and use this to help calculate your scores which are of value to you and your groups and practice plans.  However, just as with any CV template, it needs to be kept up to date.  At this time, I have been somewhat disappointed by the number of faculty who are either not using WebCV, or who have failed to keep it updated.

Some of you may not be familiar with entering data on WebCV.  In fact, most faculty are relying on their administrative assistants to do this.  The good news is that there is help available at all times to assist you in answering any questions you may have about WebCV.  For example, some of the upcoming training sessions include General WebCV Group Sessions, Creative Professional Activities (CPA) Report Sessions, and Teaching and Education Report (TER) Sessions.

I encourage all of you to continue to use the WebCV program to its maximum potential.  It is the best way for the Department of Surgery to keep track of your grants, publications, teaching activities and CPA.  If you have any questions about WebCV, please visit:  http://webcv.utoronto.ca/

I thank you all again for using WebCV in the Department of Surgery.

Sincerely,

James T. Rutka, MD, PhD, FRCSC
