MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the new 2012-13 Academic Year!  I hope you all enjoyed the summer months this year.  We had an exceptionally busy and productive year in the Department of Surgery this past year, and many of our achievements and accomplishments were highlighted during my Annual Address at the Li Ka Shing Learning Institute at St Michael's Hospital on Friday September 7th, 2012.  I continue to be in awe of the talent and determination of our faculty, residents and fellows, and this was abundantly clear to me as I reviewed the plethora of new Awards and Grants that we received.  Our faculty received over $36 Million in grant support this past year from peer review granting agencies. Ten were promoted to higher ranks by the Decanal Committee in the Faculty of Medicine.  There were 32 new adjunct clinical appointments in our community affiliated hospitals.  Our Advancement Office received more than $2.7 Million in support of fellowships and operations thanks to the outstanding work of Darina Landa, Senior Development Officer.  Finally, we have completed and have now circulated our Strategic Plan, entitled "Transforming Surgery:  Beyond the Cutting Edge".  By now, most of you should have received the document in which we describe our five main strategic directions:  1) Education, 2) Research and Innovation, 3) Best Practices, 4) Faculty Development, and 5) Integration and Outreach.  For those of you who wish to view the Strategic plan electronically, please go to:  http://surgery.utoronto.ca/about/strategic-plan.htm

I look forward to yet again another banner year for the Department of Surgery as we strive to reach all our goals.  I am indebted to the Executive Committee, the Senior Advisory Committee, the Staff at the Banting, and all of you, for making our Department the best that it can be, and the envy of many around the world.

Reaching Out to Pre-Clerkship Medical Students in Surgery:
As many of you recall, last year the Surgery Exploration And Discovery (SEAD) program was launched as a summer program for pre-clerkship medical students at the University of Toronto interested in careers surgery.  Details of this course and its success can be found by going to the following youtube link, and seeing the video that was made by Nada Gawad who organized the program with her medical student colleagues.

Dr. Paul Kongkham joins the Division of Neurosurgery at the Toronto Western Hospital following a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.  His clinical interest is in treating adult patients with intra-axial primary and secondary brain tumours. His basic science research efforts will examine epigenetic mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of both glial tumours and CNS metastases.  Paul is a graduate of the neurosurgery residency and surgeon scientist training program in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Jason Lee has joined the Division of Urology at St Michael’s Hospital. Jason completed both his medical school and urology residency training at the University of Toronto.  He completed a fellowship in minimally Invasive urologic surgery and surgical education at the University of California Irvine. He is also working towards completing a Master of Health Professions Education degree through the University of Illinois at Chicago. His clinical practice will focus on robotic and laparoscopic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer, management of complex stone disease, and renal transplantation. His research interests focus on mainly surgical education, including curriculum development and the utilization of simulation-based training methods.

Dr. Steven McCabe has joined the Toronto Western Hospital as Director of the Hand Program.  He was previously at the University of Louisville and Kleinert Institute.  His goals are to transform the Hand Program into a University wide collaborative group, to develop a program in hand transplantation, and to invigorate the academic mission of hand surgery at the University.  His research interests include elucidation of the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, and decision modeling as applied to the upper extremity. His clinical interests lie in upper extremity trauma, nerve compression, and arthritis.
