MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

 As we launched our Strategic Plan in the Department of Surgery last September, it seems timely to provide you with this update approximately one year later. In general, we have been making great strides towards our goals in all areas. In Quality and Best Practices (QBP), Robin McLeod has formed a committee, and taken a survey of the faculty’s interest and knowledge of QBP relating to surgery. Additional representation will include each of the University Division Chairs. One of the early projects identified for this group was “Readmission Rates” to hospital following surgery. This statistic affects all surgical services, and the information derived from the analysis will be most helpful for all Divisions of Surgery. In Faculty Development, Ori Rotstein has formed a committee which will examine in detail the areas of mentoring, stress and burnout, and surgeon leadership. In addition, this group is working on improving the transparency around Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs), Promotions, and New Faculty Appointments. In the area of Innovation, Shaf Keshavjee has formed a working group which will serve as a resource to and provide mentorship for surgeons engaged in innovative procedures or equipment design. A network is being created of business development experts and intellectual property officers to work with and advise this group. As a means to incentivize surgeons in this domain, surgical innovation will become a career path for promotion for several surgeons in the sphere of Creative Professional Activity. In Integration and Global Outreach, Avery Nathens has formed a committee, and surveyed the faculty in the Department of Surgery to determine where surgeons have vested interests abroad. It is the goal of this strategic direction to make International Surgery a valid academic stream by which faculty can earn points on their Annual Assessments of Productivity (AAP’s). This group will also build upon the International Surgery website, and provide a means by which residents interested in International Surgery efforts can be supported through funds from the Department of Surgery. In Education, David Latter has formed a group which is identifying key core competencies in each of the Divisions for the purposes of developing competency based assessment programs with the assistance of Ron Levine. In addition, surgical simulation plays a large role in this strategic area, and efforts are being made to co-ordinate surgical simulation activities across the TAHSN hospitals. In undergraduate medical education, numerous programs have been put into place by George Christakis which have provided a more comprehensive experience to medical students interested in career paths in surgery. We are on track with our first year goals of the Strategic Plan. None of the progress we have made thus far would have been possible without the assistance of our Strategic Plan Implementation Co-ordinator, Joanna Giddens. In Memoriam
 Dr. William R. N. Lindsay (Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) passed away on November 3, 2013 at the age of 87.
Dr. Lindsay graduated from the University of Alberta and pursued his post-graduate training in Toronto and the UK. Dr. Lindsay became the first Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Wellesley Hospital in 1966 and was one of the first to develop the Rosedale Medical Clinic, a free-standing Surgi-Centre. With Dr. Leith Douglas, the Wellesley rotation was one of the best opportunities for surgical residents to access great pathology and fascinating cases. He was also one of the pioneers in trans-gender surgery and had a busy aesthetic practice. He was one of the founding members of MANUS Canada and under his direction developed the Wellesley Hospital Aesthetic Surgery Symposium. This event continues as the UofT Annual Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Symposium which held its 43rd event earlier this year. A lecture is named in honor of Dr. Lindsay and delivered yearly.Paper in Science Translational Medicine Keith Jarvi’s paper on semen markers for the detection of sperm was published November 20th in Science Translational Medicine. It was reported on CTV, Winnipeg Free Press, BBC, German Public Radio. New Appointment to the Department of Surgery Please help me welcome the following new appointee to the Department of Surgery!  Dr. Nicole Look Hong has joined the Division of General Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Look Hong completed her undergraduate education at Queen’s University with a concentration in life sciences and minor in music. She then attended the University of Toronto for medical school and remained here for her residency in general surgery. While a resident, Nicole completed a Master of Science in clinical epidemiology through the surgical scientist program. Nicole then did a surgical oncology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Over the course of this fellowship, she also spent several months furthering her education at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Look Hong focuses her clinical practice on breast cancer and melanoma and her academic research interests in health economics and the improvement in cancer care efficiency. She is currently involved in the use of new ablative techniques in early breast cancer and the use of novel techniques for accurate intraoperative breast cancer localization. Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs) The following Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs) took place in November under the leadership of Ori Rotstein, Associate Chair, Department of Surgery.  Leo DaCosta joined the Division of Neurosurgery at UHN as an Assistant Professor in September 2008. He received his MD and neurosurgical training from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He worked as a staff neurosurgeon at the Benjamin Guimarães Foundation and João XXIII State Trauma Hospital for three years before coming to Toronto for his fellowship training in Cerebrovascular Surgery, Interventional Neuroradiology and Spine Surgery after which he remained as a faculty member. His clinical practice is mostly focused on patients with Cerebrovascular and Spine diseases. From left to right: M. Schwartz, T. Mainprize, L. DaCosta, A. Nathens, A. Lozano Fuad Moussa joined the Division of Cardiac Surgery as an Assistant Professor in July 2010. He received his BSc, MSc and MDCM degrees from McGill University and then went to The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Centre where he completed residencies in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Moussa then came to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as a Fellow and then a Clinical Associate. He was then recruited as a Surgeon-Teacher. Since then, he has completed a Fellowship at The Wilson Centre for Research in Education and a Masters Degree in Medical Education through the University of Dundee (Scotland). His clinical interests and creative professional activity have been in the areas of Off-Pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB) and minimally invasive OPCAB. Dr. Moussa was appointed as the Director of Undergraduate Education for Sunnybrook’s Department of Surgery in January 2013. From left to right: F. Moussa, C. Caldarone IDEAS (Improving & Driving Excellence Across Sectors) This is a new, province-wide educational initiative to advance Ontario’s health system priorities by building capacity in quality improvement, leadership and change management across all health care sectors. Based at U of T, IDEAS is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and delivered collaboratively by Ontario's six faculties of medicine and health sciences, Health Quality Ontario (HQO), the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), and U of T’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME).
HONOURS AND AWARDS
 Jameel Ali (General Surgery) received an honorary fellowship from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, November 2012. Earl Bogoch (Orthopaedics) won the Osteoporosis Canada's Lindy Fraser Memorial Award. The accolade recognizes individuals who have conducted exemplary research in osteoporosis, and have helped increase awareness and knowledge of the condition. Michael Cusimano (Neurosurgery) received the 2013 Dr. Tom Pashby Sports Safety Fund Award. The award recognizes efforts to prevent major sports and recreation-related injuries. Hong-Shuo Sun (Anatomy) received a 3 year CIHR-China-Canada Joint Health Research Initiative Grant for his work entitled “The Role of Chloride Channel CIC-3 in Cerebral Ischemia and Its Therapeutic Potential in Stroke”. Ron Zuker (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) on an invitation to South Africa recently received 1) an Honorary Fellowship of the College of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa; 2) an Honorary Membership in the Association of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa; and 3) the Humanitarian Award from the Smile Foundation of South Africa.
