MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
| Quality & Best Practices in the Department of Surgery: Patient-Centered Care Initiative
There are a few discipline-wide health movements that have generated the traction and interest quite like Quality Improvement has over the past several years. Broadly defined as a systematic approach to making changes that lead to better patient outcomes, stronger system performance, and enhanced professional development, Quality Improvement is an approach that requires continuous efforts from both patients and providers alike.
Our Department of Surgery is certainly no exception – nor stranger – to this approach. The last few years have brought about significant changes and improvements in the realm of Quality Improvement across our Toronto hospitals system. Dr. Robin McLeod and her clinical team have led the establishment of new standards of patient care since 2006 including the development of the Best Practices in General Surgery (BPIGs) guidelines and a Quality & Best Practices Committee that has been meeting regularly for the past two years. The committee has successfully completed an in-depth study of readmission rates for index procedures across the surgical disciplines and will soon be publishing their findings, along with recommendations for reducing these rates through standardized patient care. They have also implemented a Quality Improvement resident curriculum.
I should like to share the committee’s newest endeavor with you – The Department of Surgery Patient Engagement Project. This will be a series of three, one day meetings with 32 patient and 16 surgeon representatives as well as 8 representatives from nursing and hospital administration as well as 8 representatives from nursing and hospital administration representing all specialties across the U. of T teaching hospitals. The objectives of these meetings will be to develop a patient-centred framework for the ideal surgical experience in order to identify current gaps in care, and to develop strategies to close these gaps in care. At the end of the project we will have a fully organized Patient and Family Advisory Council for the Department of Surgery as well as a strategic plan to improve the patient surgical experience across the department. The meeting dates are April 15, June 17 and October 21, 2016. This is a very exciting project and may be one of the first of its kind across Canada and United States for departments of surgery such as ours.
It is our expectation that the development of patient-centered guidelines for the Department of Surgery will in turn improve priority domains of patient-centered care in the university affiliated hospitals across Toronto.
I should like to thank Robin McLeod and her Quality & Best Practices committee, and Joanna Giddens, Strategic Plan Implementation Co-ordinator, for helping us move these initiatives forward so effectively.

Appointment to the Crean Hotson Chair in Skull Base Surgery at University Health Network
Fred Gentili (Neurosurgery) has been appointed as the Crean Hotson Chair in Skull Base Surgery at University Health Network for 5 years.
Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR)
Karen Davis (Neurosurgery) is one of the PIs in a $25M group grant from the CIHR SPOR network for their Chronic Pain Network. This network is led by Dr. Norm Buckley, Professor and Chair of Anesthesia for McMaster University's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and Scientific Director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care. This project will have patients working with researchers, healthcare professionals, educators and government policy advisors to increase care access for chronic pain sufferers.
New Appointment in Neurosurgery, The Hospital for Sick Children
Douglas Cochrane (Neurosurgery) is doing a 15 month sabbatical at The Hospital for Sick Children in the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. Cochrane has been the Chair of the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council, and Provincial Patient Safety & Quality Officer for British Columbia. He is Professor at the University of British Columbia in Neurosurgery. Interestingly, he did a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1981. He has served as head of the Section of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief, BC Children’s Hospital and Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia 1991-2001.
