This year marked the 15th anniversary of the Tator-Turnbull Lectureship in Spinal Cord Injury. It was a spectacular event with close to 200 attendees. It was particularly special as there was a moving tribute to Barbara Turnbull and a dedication of one of the spinal cord injury lab investigator offices (that belonging to Charles Tator) in Barb's name.

The lectureship featured Claes Hultling from the Karolinska Institute --Claes is himself a quadriplegic as well as an innovative rehabilitation physician and researcher.

Also of note, John Honderich --publisher of the Toronto Star attended the event--as a recognition of Barb's work as a Toronto Star reporter. Several of Barb's colleagues, supporters and family members also attended the event. The lectureship also highlighted the strengths in preclinical and clinical translational research in SCI at UHN and U of T.

Dr. Keith Jarvi (Urology) and his team now have a major licensing agreement with a a US Laboratory covering North America and a large Chinese diagnostics company in China for a marker for the diagnosis of different types of male infertility. This is a significant accomplishment which is the result of years of laboratory research. Congratulations Keith!

Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs)
The following Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs) took place in November under the leadership of Ori Rotstein, Associate Chair, Department of Surgery.

Simon Kelley joined the Division of Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Sick Children as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at The University of Toronto. Dr. Kelley received his medical degree from the University of Birmingham,UK in 1997. He undertook his basic surgical training in Leeds, UK then moved to Bristol in South West, UK to join the higher surgical residency training scheme in trauma and orthopaedics. He then went on to do a limb reconstruction fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 2008 followed by being awarded the first Trans-Canada paediatric orthopaedic fellowship in 2008-2009 at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto; Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Montreal and BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver. Dr Kelley has won awards for clinical excellence, teaching and research, has presented his research at national and international meetings in North America, Europe and Asia.   He has published research papers on a wide range of topics and has written 7 book chapters. His areas of clinical interest include congenital limb deficiencies, skeletal dysplasias, posttraumatic limb deformity, and hip dysplasia. 	MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Best Practices in Faculty Searches

	The collective talent of the Department of Surgery rests on our recruitment of exceptional faculty members who strategically enhance our mission. As you know, virtually all appointments to the Department of Surgery are a product of a search process which enables Search Committees to identify the best candidates for a given position. In this regard, the Department of Surgery has been exemplary in holding searches for well over the past decade. While the search process has been a good one, this past year I tasked Peter Ferguson, Tom Forbes, and Robin Richards to generate “best practices” in faculty searches in the Department of Surgery. I am delighted to inform you that the document they created has been reviewed by members of the Executive and Senior Advisory Committees, amended, and now adopted as policy in the Department of Surgery. In general terms, the Search Committee is a broadly representative group of individuals whose membership must be approved by the Department Chair and/or Surgeon-in-Chief. Membership includes the Hospital Division Head, members of the Division, the University Division Chair, Surgeon-in-Chief, Student representatives, Research Institute delegate, and Department of Surgery Chair, among others. The Search Committee must reflect a broad diversity of backgrounds including, race, ethnicity and gender. In the new best practices document, it is stressed that all discussion must be kept entirely confidential; any personal biases for/against a candidate must be stated at the outset; deliberations must avoid discrimination on any basis listed in the Ontario Human Rights Code; reference checks and due diligence must be conducted systematically; and decisions are made, wherever possible, based on consensus of the committee. The interview of candidates during the search process is intended to provide both the committee members and the candidates with sufficient time to ask the necessary questions of one another. At times, making the decision can be challenging given the considerable qualifications of candidates applying for the position. In the end, the search process provides a layer of transparency to faculty appointments which was not necessarily the case two decades ago. I should like to thank Peter Ferguson and colleagues for finalizing the new best practices in faculty searches document which I strongly believe will hold the Department of Surgery in good stead for many years to come.
