Over the holidays, I visited the Parkwood National Historic Site in Oshawa. For those of you who are not familiar with Parkwood, it was the family estate of Robert Samuel (RS) McLaughlin. As many of you are aware, the RS McLaughlin Foundation allocated funds to the Department of Surgery to establish the RS McLaughlin Chair in Surgery which I have the privilege of holding.  What you may not know is that during and after his lifetime, RS McLaughlin (affectionately known as “Sam”) and the McLaughlin Foundation awarded almost $200 million to the University of Toronto to a number of different Departments and Institutes. The McLaughlin Chair in the Department of Surgery was established through the efforts of Dr. DR Wilson when he was Chair of the Department of Surgery (1972-82).  Prior to that, another previous Chair, William Gallie had become friends with Sam and persuaded him to donate funds to establish a traveling fellowship for surgeons at the University of Toronto. Many surgeons from our Faculty have taken full advantage of this opportunity. 
 
I was very fortunate to receive a private tour of the entire estate. I was immediately intrigued with RS McLaughlin’s attention to detail and his clear appreciation of the importance of technologies. The house itself is replete with such examples of “high end” technologies of the day, and many of these were among the first ever in homes and buildings in Canada.   Some of these included a movie theatre, air conditioning units, a quadrophonic stereo system hidden within the bookcases of Sam’s study, and the indoor heated pool. 
 
The McLaughlin family initially made carriages and wagons, but with the onset of the automotive industry, they formed the “McLaughlin Motorcar Company” in 1908.  Sam was President at that time, but it was clear that they were unable to compete with other car companies. Hence, McLaughlin Motor Company was sold, and Sam joined forces with the General Motors Corporation. He became the President of General Motors Company of Canada which was stationed in Oshawa near Parkwood. He was President, from 1918-1945. Following this he remained as Chairman of the Board of General Motors Canada until 1972.  It was clear to me that R.S. McLaughlin was an incredible man with tremendous vision. He was the leader of one of Canada’s most important companies over 30 years. In 1967, Sam was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
 
It is my great pleasure to review the history of the McLaughlin Estate at Parkwood, and to know a little bit more about the man who has helped the Department of Surgery and many surgeons in so many ways over the years.

In Memoriam
Dr. John Gerald Connolly 
(Surgery Alumnus)
 passed away on December 12, 2014.  John studied Medicine at the University of Toronto receiving his MD in 1949.  After training in Edinburgh, London, New York City,  and Kingston, he returned to Toronto securing an appointment at Women's College Hospital in 1971 and subsequently became cross appointed at Princess Margaret Hospital and the Toronto General Hospital. John was appointed as Associate Surgeon in Chief in the early 80's and stepped up as interim Surgeon in Chief during a period of
turbulence at Women's College Hospital.  Within the Division of Urology at the University of Toronto he is remembered as 'a mentor and an original thinker.'   Even upon retirement his curiosity was relentless. He worked for more than a decade on a series of innovative medical devices. 
 
Dr. Sigmund H. Ein (Surgery Alumnus) passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015.  Dr. Ein began his career at SickKids on July 1, 1969 in the Division of General Surgery where he remained until his retirement in 2004. During his 35 years at the University of Toronto,  he held many leadership positions within Sick Kids and was President of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons.  After retirement he remained an Honorary member of staff at SickKids and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto.  Dr Ein was devoted to the children and their families, and his advocacy on their behalf served as a powerful role model for several generations of trainees and colleagues. Dr. Ein was internationally known for promoting and documenting the natural history and non-operative management of a variety of paediatric surgical conditions.  Dr. Ein will be remembered for many things including playing Santa at the annual Perioperative Holiday Grand Rounds at Sick Kids, his “den” (which was an eclectic mix of sporting memorabilia and gifts from patients), and his many “Einisms” as his fellows would call them.  Dr. Ein was a dedicated surgeon, teacher, mentor, husband and father whose signature purple marker will be remembered by everyone who was lucky enough to have met him. 
 
Chris Caldarone (Cardiac Surgery) has been appointed as Surgeon-in-Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children effective immediately.  Chris is presently Chair of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Toronto and holds the Watson Family Chair in Cardiovascular Sciences.   He became a faculty member at SickKids in 2003.  He is recognized internationally as a clinician, scientist, and scholar.
 



Marc Jeschke (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) was featured on the CTV  News At 6, January 6, 2015.  He proudly wore his U. of T. Department of Surgery scrub cap as he discussed how to prevent frost bite.  Marc is the Director of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Sunnybrook Health Science Center and a Professor in the Department of Surgery, Department of Immunology and the Institute of Medical Science at UofT. He holds the Chair of Burn Research and is a Senior Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute.
 



Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs)
The following Continuing Appointment Reviews (CARs) took place in January under the leadership of Ori Rotstein, Associate Chair, Department of Surgery.  
 
Girish Kulkarni joined the Division of Urology in 2011 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Toronto.  He completed his medical school and residency in urology at the University of Toronto. During his residency, he entered the Surgeon-Scientist program and completed his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology through the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). He then completed a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Leonard Tse joined the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre at UHN in 2011.  He completed his M.D. degree in 1997 at the University of Toronto; his General Surgery in Toronto; and Vascular Surgery at McGill University in 2004. He practiced vascular surgery in Calgary for 4 years where he served as the Program Director of the University of Calgary Vascular Surgery Residency Training Program. In 2008 he returned to the University of Toronto Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering as a full-time graduate student in the MASc program. In 2010 he completed his research thesis and is now an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.  His research interests involve the engineering aspects of minimally-invasive endovascular technology used in vascular surgery, and the use of computational modeling for aortic pathology. In collaboration with the Université de Montreal, he published the world’s first antegrade in-situ fenestration of an aortic stent-graft. Development of the technique of in-situ fenestration has led to further study in materials and collaboration with the NCSU College of Textiles. Peter Ferguson (Orthopaedics) has been named the 2015 recipient of the RCPSC/AMS/Donald Richard Wilson Award.  Recipients of the award are recognized for helping integrate CanMEDS roles into a Royal College or other health-related training program.
 
Ethan Grober (Urology) received a grant from the WCHAMSG Innovation Fund for his project entitled, “Development and Validation of a Competency-Based Program of Education and Assessment of the Fundamentals of Micro Surgery (FMS).”
 
Timothy Jackson (General Surgery) is the 2013-2014 recipient of Continuing Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine's David Fear Fellowship.  This award recognizes and promotes the importance of innovative programs in continuing education for health professionals.
 
Michael Jewett (Urology) is the recipient of an award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for his project “Determining the Research Priorities of Canadian Kidney Cancer Patients, Caregivers and Clinicians: A Priority Setting Partnership for Kidney Cancer”.  This award was ranked #1 in the entire competition!
 
Shaf Keshavjee (Thoracic Surgery) has been awarded the Order of Canada (Officer) for his innovative contributions to thoracic surgery.
 
Laurence Klotz (Urology) has been awarded the Order of Canada (Member) for his contributions to the treatment of prostate cancer.
