Arrival of the Winter Rains
|The deep, soft-soaking rains that fell over the Easter Weekend brought a collective sigh of relief from all the inhabitants of Platbos. Due to the annual rains of 2010 being half that of normal, by February this year the forest was extremely parched and drought-stressed.|
So dire was the situation that by the start of April we began to water the big, old trees that we could reach with our hose pipes. Once you get to know the great and gnarled personalities that make up the forest community, it is simply not possible to remain unmoved by their plight. At the height of the drought, it seemed as though all forest wild life had moved to the green oasis that is our tree nursery. The forest surrounding the nursery soaks up the runoff from the irrigation system and as a result, the trees there bear abundant fruit and their leaves retain their moisture content. This draws the birds by day and browsing bush buck by night. Water = Life and on this note, I am proud to introduce Platbos Forest´s latest Tree Planting Partner: Green Africa Water Systems.

Celebrating Forests: A "Tree Planting Party" Weekend
at Bodhi Khaya 8 - 10 July 2011
|Join us for a fun-filled, feel-good weekend of re-planting forest at neighbouring Bodhi Khaya Retreat. Platbos Forest once extended way beyond its present borders: isolated pockets of indigenous forest can be seen dotted throughout the Uilkraal Vallei and even in and around the town of Stanford. The grand vision is to see these pockets of trees protected and eventually reconnected to Platbos - the "Mother Forest" - so that this important indigenous forest biome is conserved and reintroduced back into the landscape.|
Weekend Programme at Bodhi Kahya:
- Over the course of the weekend, participants will plant a range of trees indigenous to the Uilkraal Vallei as well as a few new specimens for Bodhi Khaya´s beautiful arboretum.
- We will be re-planting a gentle slope that was once forested.
- Participants will gain a wealth of knowledge about trees and forests, how to plant them correctly and how to ensure that they live long and happy lives.
- If time allows, we will visit Platbos Forest for a walk in this unique and ancient forest.
- In short: a practical, fun-filled weekend of celebrating trees and forests.
Each participant is asked to sponsor 3 trees at R50.00 each. Bodhi Khaya is generously providing the accommodation free of charge. Catering costs for the weekend will be R280.00 per person.
Full Fee for the weekend is therefore: R430.00 per person.
Reserve your place soon: space is limited to 30 participants!
