Concreteworks Guide to Bay Area Restaurants

We often have the pleasure of working with great restaurants throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for projects large and small. Take a tour of some of the restaurants we have contributed to over the past few years in our 2014 Restaurant Guide.

Charlie Hallowell's much anticipated third restaurant, Penrose, opened in November 2013. This mainly raw and grill-based establishment incorporates a unique poured-in-place bar to achieve the specific appearance of troweled concrete. Concreteworks also fabricated the pre-cast columns and footers for the bar and restroom vanities. Hallowell's other restaurants, also located in Oakland, include his original Pizzaiolo on Telegraph Ave. and Boot and Shoe Service, across the street from Penrose.

Abbot's Cellar

Built on the former site of the Valencia St. Hotel, which collapsed in the 1906 earthquake, this Mission District restaurant focuses on pairing craft beer and California cuisine. Multiple visits are definitely a must here, since the place houses a two-story wine and beer cellar. Focusing on the beer aspect of the restaurant, Concreteworks manufactured a vanity top with a beer bottle shaped sink that contains recycled beer-bottle glass. Also included is a concrete bartop and a surround for the oven with a custom pig graphic.

Neighborhood joint Outerlands just expanded to include a full bar and more seating. Lana Porcell and David Muller own the restaurant, which prides itself on their house-made bread and grilled cheese, among other delicious dishes. Just blocks from the beach, at Judah and 45th, guests can sign up for a table and stroll the area. The renovation and expansion includes a Concreteworks bartop and restroom sink.

Roka Akor

Roka Akor is a decadent upscale Japanese sushi, seafood, and steak restaurant with locations in Arizona, Chicago, and now San Francisco. Opened in June 2013, the San Francisco Roka Akor serves delicately plated fresh fish over crushed ice, a variety of robata grill dishes, and a vast selection of sakes, among many other delicious treats. Concreteworks custom pieces can be seen throughout the restaurant with wall panels artistically mimicking bamboo behind the sushi bar and grill, dark starry backlit tiles lining the entryway, and two styles of sinks featured in the upstairs and downstairs restrooms.

Sightglass Coffee

The culture of craft coffee has become prominent in recent years, with many small companies opening up shop. The attention to detail in sourcing, roasting, and brewing of the coffee is impeccable. Sightglass is an "independent, sibling-owned coffee company in San Francisco," that now has two locations. Concreteworks countertops grace the original Sightglass Top Bar, which offers a variance from the coffee that is served downstairs, including different brewing methods, coffee-bean preparations, such as single-origin espresso, and a tasting-room experience.

Trou Normand

Thad Vogler of Bar Agricole debuted his new restaurant Trou Normand in mid-March. It is located on the ground floor of the historic Art Deco Pacific Telephone Building at 140 New Montgomery. Open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m., the restaurant serves breakfast through dinner. A "trou normand" is a traditional French palate-cleanser - a shot of brandy, notably Calvados - served between courses of a long meal to settle the stomach. Rightfully so, they have a wide selection of armagnac, cognac, and calvados, mostly sourced directly from Europe. Look for the Concreteworks custom floor tiles in the entry and on the way to the patio in  the back room. The two-toned tiles were made in an old tradition rarely seen in North America. We also made the restroom sinks.

Jack London Square's revitalization grew with the addition of Haven, the third restaurant by the Daniel Patterson Group, with new California cuisine. Haven believes in whole animal and vegetable utilization, and the use of fresh ingredients, creating an inventive and seasonally changing menu. For Haven, Concreteworks created custom patio tables with incorporated planters. The tables line the patio edge facing the water with side-by-side seating for two.

St. George Spirits

St. George Spirits is a local, small-batch distillery that has evolved and advanced the art of making craft spirits. Starting in 1982 as an eau de vie distillery, the company now has a vast but still select range of spirits. Located in an old hangar on the Alameda Naval Base with a tasting room and their full distillery in house. Concreteworks originally created the bartop in the tasting room and later returned to help with additional bartops in their expansion. A leisurely afternoon can be spent at St. George with a tour of the distillery and some samples of their delightful spirits.

Saltwater Oyster Depot

North of San Francisco, in the quaint community of Inverness, nestled alongside Tomales Bay, is Saltwater Oyster Depot. The restaurant was opened by Luc Chamberland in June 2012 with the help of crowd-sourced funding from the community. Concreteworks fabricated a bar top with integrated shellfish basins to hold ice and oysters served fresh from the local Pickleweed Point Oyster Company, among others.

Pizzeria Delfina - Burlingame

Annie and Craig Stoll opened the successful neighborhood hot spot Pizzeria Delfina in the Mission District of San Francisco in 2005. Since then they have opened three more locations, with one of the most recent in Burlingame. Concreteworks fabricated wall tiles for the front facade, including a custom cast-in logo with their name, as well as restroom tiles and vanities. Chalk is playfully used on the front facade by guests to write a name on the wait list or to draw while waiting for a pizza or a table.
