CANI welcomes new class of AmeriCorps members

On September 3rd CANI welcomed a new class of ten CANI Corps members into the agency. CANI Corps is an AmeriCorps program organized and operated by CANI. Over the next year, these individuals will be working in four focus areas: Early Childhood Education, Financial Literacy, Healthy Futures, and Outreach. Each CANI Corps member will complete 1,700 hours of service while gaining professional experience and making a difference in the community.

This is the second year that CANI has operated the CANI Corps program. In addition to CANI, members are serving at Lutheran Social Services and the Fort Wayne Housing Authority.

Head Start Updates

CANI Head Start will begin the 2013-2014 school year on Monday, September 16th. This year, Head Start will serve 715 children in Allen, Noble, and Whitley counties. The program helps families by providing children with quality preschool education and screening for vision, dental, hearing, and cognitive abilities. In addition, Head Start Family Advocates work with the families based on their individual needs.

Due to federal budget cuts, better known as sequestration, the Grace St. John's Head Start site has been closed. In addition, CANI has brought the East Wayne Head Start site, formerly a delegate location not operated by CANI, under the CANI umbrella. Despite these changes, CANI is confident in the ability to serve the maximum number of children and families within the counties served. A complete list of CANI Head Start sites and contact information is available on our website.

Energy Assistance Program to begin taking applications

Beginning October 1st, CANI will accept applications for the Energy Assistance Program. Eligible families receive assistance in paying a portion of their winter heating bills. In 2012, 9,337 families received help with their utility bills, either reconnecting services or preventing disconnect. Interested individuals should call CANI for specific details and application paperwork.
