Working for Change
Focal Areas: Education, Health, Environment, Human Rights

In November, Terrawatu hosted a multi-day workshop with Arusha City Legal Aid Network in Terrat ward. The purpose of this event was to educate the community on their rights on land ownership (especially women), inheritance, writing of a will, FGM, and the rights of children. The workshop also brought together the intentions of the International Day of Girls and World AIDS Day.

Terrawatu staff and assistants provided educational talks to students at the following government schools: Mkonoo Primary and Secondary, Kinana Primary and Secondary. And at the following private schools: Intel Nursery and Primary, Integrity Nursery and Primary, Cheti Primary and Nyahili Primary School. We also had a special training with street leaders and Ten House Cell system representatives (the smallest units of the governing structure in Tanzania) as these are the main people who help resolve family problems and report to ward offices and police.

With the downturn of the economy due to the global pandemic, poverty and desperation levels are rising as they are around the world. Terrawatu stepped up immediately to help educate people on their rights and opportunities.

Update on Permaculture Project

Crops are already growing on the plot of land we purchased a few months back as part of the initiative to develop a demonstration permaculture farm that would educate the community at the same time as growing food to feed families impacted by the pandemic. Onions, carrots, spinach and sukuma wiki (collard greens) are growing and we will soon add avocados and bananas.

Already, another orphanage that has some land has asked our assistance in how to cultivate it using permaculture techniques. Terrawatu has attended to this request.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, healthy and peaceful festive season.

Blessings from Dr. Tanya, Sululu, Angella, Boniface and the whole Terrawatu Team
