Dr. Tanya is back from Arusha...

On the 1st of September, the Terrawatu Team traveled to Natema Primary School to officially open the new classrooms. Founding Co-Director Dr. Tanya Pergola was in town from the United States and participated in the joyous occasion.

"I have to admit, as soon as I arrived and found hundreds of students singing for us, tears came to my eyes. We have been working to build up this school since Terrawatu began, 15 years ago. I was overwhelmed with joy." Dr. Tanya says.

After the speeches by school and government officials, traditional dancing by Maasai students, and a delicious meal cooked by local mamas and served to everybody present, the Terrawatu staff met with the teachers at the school to discuss their technology needs. Terrawatu volunteer Mike Parker was also visiting from the United States and participated in the teacher workshop. This enlightening workshop provided Terrawatu with the way forward for outfitting the new tech centre in the most useful and efficient way possible.

The "Terrawatu" building at Natema Primary School is almost complete. We are embarking now on the final phase of the project. When finished, the school building, located in an impoverished area outside of Arusha town, will house three large classrooms, a teacher's office, and a computer lab. This computer lab will join the list of over a dozen others in the region developed by Terrawatu over the last decade.

New classrooms, tech centres and overall hope for education is key to the future
for this generation, the development of nations, and for peace the world over.

Co-Directors Dr. Tanya Pergola and Lekoko Ole Sululu participate in annual StoryMoja Festival in Nairobi, Kenya
"The Storymoja Festival has grown to a vibrant gathering of the greatest minds in Kenya and beyond, celebrating ideas and culture. Books are brought to life through poetry, storytelling, lively discussions with local and international artists, music, workshops, film and much more..."

From the 16th - 20th of September, Co-Director and author Dr. Tanya Pergola traveled to Nairobi, Kenya with the co-creator of her book Time is Cows: Timeless Wisdom of the Maasai, Ole Sululu, to be featured artists at this very special festival.

They hosted five master classes sharing the wisdom of the indigenous Maasai people with hundreds of students, teachers and adults. Dr. Tanya taught stress management techniques and meditation to groups of primary and secondary school students from Kenya. Many rushed after her for her autograph after the sessions.

Additional highlights included the patron of the festival Dr. Auma Obama (the sister of US President Barack Obama) speaking passionately about the increasing importance of reading full-length books in this day and age; and the Wangari Maathai Memorial Lecture, delivered by UNEP Chief Scientist, Jacqueline McGlade. The festival was held on the grounds of the absolutely stunning Nairobi Arboretum which clearly still houses the spirit of Wangari Maathai, inspiring us all to nurture our natural environment and keep our minds clear and focused.

Time is Cows: Timeless Wisdom of the Maasai is now available in the Kenyan marketplace and can be found at Text Book Centre locations and at Bookstop. Dr. Tanya and Ole Sululu were interviewed by several press outlets about their work with Terrawatu, their philosophy on development assistance, and conservation of indigenous culture.

Video recordings from the festival should be available in the coming weeks. Visit StoryMoja Festival for more information.
