Hello friends of MDJ,

Kindly, several of you have reached out to various members of our team asking about how MDJ, its team and the community of Chichicastenango are being impacted by the global pandemic we are all experiencing.  We want to share with you what we know at this time and what our current plans are.

The government of Guatemala has placed significant restrictions on travel and movement, similar to what we are experiencing here in the US, maybe even tighter.  As part of that, no transportation is taking place between the US and Guatemala.  The government plan for addressing a potential spread of COVID-19 is to centralize all treatment in Guatemala City via the medical system and a large camp facility they are creating to house infected people.

The Koetsier family, Annika and Kerri are all on the ground in Guatemala and plan to stay at MDJ in Chichicastenango for the foreseeable future.   If circumstances dictate they may relocate at a later date.

Our goal as a ministry is to provide support during this event to our American and Guatemalan staff, and as warranted, to the greater Chichi community.  For now, like in the US, this primarily means providing stability for all of our employees by continuing to pay them even though they are not able to work and we are not able to deliver any programming.  Feeding and education programs have been suspended indefinitely and all of our groups through late May have canceled.

Now we can finally get to question you have all been asking- how can you help.  Here are a few ideas.

  • Please be praying for our staff, community and friends during the challenging time. Being abroad during a time like this adds a new level of uncertainty to life, the kind that only the Holy Spirit provide peace for.
  • Pray for the community of Chichi.  During times of stress the culture of the community can revert to old ways of entrenched Mayan religion. Pray for the advancement of the gospel and the power of the name of Jesus to be evident.
  • For those of you are supporting our American missionaries financially and relationally we ask that you continue to donate and communicate with them so they stay connected.
  • The ministry is stable financially but the burden of continuing to pay local staff, with no revenue from teams will diminish our capacity relatively quickly.  We ask that you consider donating to help us through this season.  A special COVID-19 Relief fund has been set up on our website. https://prayamerica.kindful.com/

We know you all have challenges that are being created by this once in a millennium event and we are praying for you as well.   We feel blessed beyond measure to count all of you as friends, family and co-workers in advancing the gospel.  We will continue to post updates on our social media pages and send emails if necessary.

Be Blessed.

The MDJ Board and Team
