Commissioner Amanda Fritz will present her proposal for Open and Accountable Elections to the Portland City Council on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Portland City Hall. This Act is a voluntary mechanism providing public funds to candidates running for city offices - Mayor, Commissioners, and city auditor.  This major mile stone on the road to getting big special interest money out of Portland politics and creating a system of governance with the interests of all Portlanders at its core needs our support.

The Alliance for Democracy supports this proposal and encourages all its members to join them and other citizens at the hearing.

While we support this, we also point out that the project is seriously undermined by the lack of limits on contributions and expenditures for those candidates who do not become certified to accept the public funds.  The city of Portland should adopt the same or similar language as is contained in the Multnomah County ballot measure, 26-184, limiting campaign contributions/expenditures and requiring the disclosure of the major funders of political ads.  All other cities or states with a public funding mechanism have limits.  The two programs, public funding and limitations, go hand in hand and Portland should move as quickly as possible to join all the other governmental bodies which have both programs.

Open and Accountable Elections for Portland OR.
The Portland City Council will be considering Open and Accountable Elections reform at an upcoming meeting and we need to show up and speak out to ensure our elected officials know what Portland needs. RSVP and SHARE the event page here!

Open and Accountable Elections would limit the power of big money by reducing the maximum contribution for participating candidates to $250, and would give ordinary Portlanders a bigger say in the political process, by matching donations up to $50 six-to- one with limited public funds.

Not only would this allow people like you and me to have a bigger impact on Portland’s elections – it would also allow community-oriented candidates to run for office with the backing of their communities.

If we want to fight for an Equal Voice for All here in Portland, then we need Open and Accountable Elections. We have a chance to win this, with two of the 3 needed city council votes already assured and one, Steve Novick, very likely to support the measure.

We just need to pack that chamber to show that Portlanders are serious about getting ourselves a government that's accountable to the people, NOT to big money.

Hearing:  Thursday, Nov 3 beginning at 3 PM
Location:  Portland City Hall,
1221 SW 4th Avenue
