April 11, 2016 - Purchase College-SUNY celebrated their official Westchester Green Business Certification at the newly renovated Humanities Building, the college’s first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) accredited building on campus.
The certificate was presented to Purchase College President, Thomas J. Schwarz by County Executive Rob Astorino, Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester and Dani Glaser, Creator and Co-Director of the Westchester Green Business Challenge and Certified program.
"Congratulations to Purchase College on becoming the first institution of higher education in Westchester County to achieve green business certification," said County Executive Robert P. Astorino. "Purchase has a long history of embracing sustainability and is a shining example of what makes Westchester a smart place for businesses to grow and students to learn. I encourage other large institutions in the county to follow the college's example and join the Westchester Green Business-Certified program."

“Environmental sustainability and conservation are priorities in all aspects of campus life,” said Thomas J. Schwarz, President of Purchase College, who was one of the original signers of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2007.  He continued, “I’m proud that Purchase, which has been selected by the Princeton Review as one of the “greenest” schools in the country, continues to demonstrate leadership in workplace sustainability.”

Marsha Gordon congratulated President Schwarz and praised the college for being a forward-thinking institution committed to sustainability at every level of the organization, attracting faculty, staff and students and growing the green economy in Westchester County.

“Purchase College’s submission for certification demonstrates extensive accomplishments across all program areas including organizational commitment, energy, materials management, water, transportation and land use. The college has received outstanding achievement awards in the past from the Westchester Green Business program for Transportation, Land Use and Water Conservation.” said Dani Glaser

Among the many green/sustainability curriculum, programs, and projects at Purchase College are: an environmental studies B.A. program; “green" lecture series and presentations; a high-tech compost machine that is used to nurture the soil of the student-run garden; projects that focus on reducing waste in offices and in food services; and an award-winning vegan cafe, Terre Ve.
Additionally, all new construction and major renovation projects focus on indoor environmental quality that meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) U.S. Green Building guidelines.
The College boasts many commuting options that encourage green living including electric car charging stations, 511NY Rideshare for commuters, and Broken Spokes, a student-run organization that replaces damaged bicycle tires.
The college received a significant grant from the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) for green infrastructure in recognition of Purchase’s leadership in sustainability. The grant is being used for managing stormwater in order to reduce flooding and improve water quality.
Thomas Kelly, the college’s senior energy manager, said, “We are working to identify and develop even more efficiencies across the campus, and we’re confident that we can succeed in our goal of saving energy and making the campus an even greener place for all who live and work here.”
