We shared some exciting news on Friday...

Dr. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester, announced the expansion of the Westchester Green Business (WGB) program in New York State to 80+ attendees at Friday’s Leaders in Sustainability Speaker Series. The WGB program was awarded $540,000 through The Cleaner, Greener Communities initiative (CGC), a statewide program, to incorporate sustainability goals and principles into local decision-making, and leading to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of economic benefits.

Dani Glaser revealed the new Westchester Green Business logo and the future direction of the program that is expanding both within Westchester and across New York State. One example is a partnership with the New York Library Association (NYLA) offering the program to its member libraries throughout the state.

Dani also spoke about the new web tool that is underway which will allow members to log in and access the program in a user friendly way as well as facilitate member collaboration

We can make a tremendous impact when we work together...

Brad Tito, of NYSERDA, the morning's keynote speaker, reminded us that we have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact when we work together.
We learned about NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Communities Program, which recognizes that local governments have a major impact on the energy choices in their business communities, and empowers them to implement sustainable practices. By completing a least 4 of 10 High Impact Action Items with the help of NYSERDA’s tool and resources, local governments can earn a Clean Energy Community Designation and implement actions that save money, create jobs and preserve the environment.
Brad also talked about NYS and community-based solar programs, such as Solarize, which streamline the approvals process and reduce “soft costs” that are often passed on to consumers. Many of the NYSERDA initiatives are job creators, as many local professionals provide related services.
We were thrilled to hear and share this news with the business owners in the room, all of whom recognize that a sustainable organization increases profits, creates jobs, appeals to environmentally-responsible customers, and attracts better talent.
As Brad said, “you should feel encouraged and optimistic that even the most serious environmental and economic challenges can be addressed by coming together as a community.”
