NYS Library Leaders Explore GREEN at WGBC Industry Roundtable

October 26, 2016 - Over twenty libraries from Westchester County and around the Hudson Valley were represented at the Westchester Green Business Industry Roundtable hosted by The Hendrick Hudson Free Library in Montrose.

This second WGBC industry forum focused on how libraries can incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into operations and achieve green business certification. The program is designed to inspire and promote sustainability among industry peers and encourage participation in the WGBC programs. The luncheon was held at The Hendrick Hudson Free Library, Westchester's first WGB-Certified library.  Participants were welcomed by Deputy County Executive, Kevin Plunkett, BCW Vice President and COO, John Ravitz and Westchester Green Business Program Directors Dani Glaser and Scott Fernqvist.

The Hendrick Hudson Free Library Director, Jill Davis, announced the library has recently been awarded the 2016 Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award by The New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries for their being the first library in Westchester County to be Green Business certified.  She explained how their two-year process towards certification lead not only to a greener library, but new opportunities to leverage other funding sources, increased staff engagement, community engagement, and positioned the library as a community leader.

The New York Library Association (NYLA) presented their Road Map to Sustainability offering library members the opportunity to become agents of change by taking steps towards holistic sustainability.  “Library leaders are also community leaders,” explained Mary Lou Carolan, Director, Cornwall Public Library, “and our community is the heart of our libraries.”  The NYLA has endorsed the WGBC program, and is now promoting the program to its members throughout New York State.
