What do Steve Jobs, Simone Biles, Faith Hill, Nelson Mandela, Eric Clapton and Jamie Foxx have in common?
They were all adopted! November is National Adoption Month and we want to recognize and celebrate our "forever families."
You don't have to be born into a family to have one, just ask any one of these famous adoptees. They will tell you that being adopted was the turning point in their successful lives.
Oscar-winning actor, singer and comedian, Jaime Foxx had this to say, "I was adopted at seven months and I'm going to tell you what that means. My grandmother? That's not actually my biological grandmother. That's somebody who said, 'I see something in that little boy that's very special."
There's something special in every child, every teenager, every youth and though every child may not grow up to be famous, every child has a better chance at reaching their fullest potential when raised in a loving family.
Did you know 135,000 children are adopted in the United States each year? Not including step-parent adoptions, 59 percent of these children are from the foster care system.
In Philadelphia alone, there are 5,000 children in foster care, including 500 teenagers in group homes. They need us. At Turning Points we know that these adoptive families come in all shape and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: LOVE. No matter if the family is Black, Caucasian, Latino, Asian, a single parent, a grandparent, LGBTQ+ or disabled the first requirement is love.
