Where does a degree from Ouachita take you?

Garrett Ham, Class of 2007

First Lieutenant, Judge Advocate General Corps Attorney,
Army National Guard—Bentonville, Ark.

As a lawyer in northwest Arkansas, Garrett Ham credits his experience with Ouachita classmates and professors for the intellectual impact they had on his life. "I was able to get to know most of my classmates and engage in critical discussions, taking my education beyond a mere intellectual assent to a deep understanding of the material," Garrett said. "I was able to get to know my professors personally, and I still keep in touch with many of them—even President Horne knows me and calls me by name. The close-knit environment on campus carries into the loyal alumni network available after graduation."

"At Ouachita, you will learn to consider a subject from all points of view and think critically about each position, including your own. Learning to see an opposing position in the best possible light is critical to a well-rounded education—and will certainly help anyone considering a career in the practice of law." —Garrett Ham

This Ouachita support system became especially evident to Garrett as he started his own law firm shortly after graduating from law school. In addition to his work at The Law Office of Garrett Ham, Garrett recently joined the National Guard, where he uses his legal expertise to provide assistance to soldiers, particularly those preparing for deployment. "Growing up in a military home, serving my country was always something I wanted to do," Garrett said. "It is an honor to provide services to these soldiers and to be ready to serve our country during times of crisis."

“At Ouachita, I learned how to research, analyze and interpret often dense and obscure texts and then apply them to daily life. Ouachita prepared me well for law school and my career as I learned to think critically and look at things holistically, a critical skill for attorneys.”
—Garrett Ham
