School Library May Newsletter

School Library News and Updates from the Library Development & Networking Division
May 2015

Len Bryan, School Program Coordinator

The State Library staff had a terrific time at the TLA conference last month, and I hope you made it by our booth to re-stock TexQuest materials, re-charge your phone, and re-ceive a free TSLAC T-Shirt! In case you could not attend TLA or our sessions, here are the School Library presentations and links from the conference.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission's Work on Revising School Library Standards and Guidelines

I got some terrific feedback from participants at our Standards Update at TLA, and I want to keep the conversation going as we gear up to begin the hard work of revising and updating the Standards. Here is the link to TSLAC's K-12 web page, which includes much of the information presented on the Standards. We are still awaiting TEA's nominees for the Standards Steering Committee, but as soon as this committee is appointed, we will jump right in and get started!

TPS Reports for May 2015

I'll be sending out spring TPS (TexQuest Participation Summary) reports on May 15. This report will go to the primary TexQuest contact for each district. The report will include your district's usage statistics through the end of April, information on Summer training, and your district's cost avoidance. Please use the information from the TPS report to tell your library's TexQuest story!

Hitting the Road

I'll be traveling to the following events in May and June - If you are in these areas or attending these events, please come by and say hi!
May 8: UT iSchool Open House and Reception - Austin
May 27 - 30: Houston Harwood Lab
June 16-18: TASLA Workshop - Austin
June 19-20: TREA Conference - Fort Worth
June 25 - 30: ALA Annual Conference - San Francisco

Library Resources

Common Craft has created an excellent video that explains how libraries are still very much needed in the age of the Internet.

Check out TSLAC's
Library Science Collection - Professional resources are available for the Texas library community. Search the library catalog of the State Library, and find information about the Library Science Collection including hours, location, services, and a listing of subscriptions to journal titles in library and information science.
